OBJECTIVE
I am currently enrolled in the Paralegal degree program at Pasadena City
College. At the present, I am working as a scenic carpenter but the law has
always been a passion of mine. I am 51 years old, originally from Kansas. As
a child, I was raised under unusual circumstances due to my dad's religious
beliefs. At 15 (1985) I was incarcerated, along with my dad. I spent roughly
12 years in prison but while inside I broke the control of my dad, earned an
AA degree in business marketing and became a legal aide through the
Nebraska Attorney General's office. Upon my release, I had intentions of
going to law school because I felt I needed to find a way to give back. I very
much wanted to get involved in prisoner rights, try to find a way to help
young people that were incarcerated and attempt to help victims of
domestic violence. I felt my experiences could greatly benefit others. Upon
release, I realized my transition was not going to be easy as I had thought. I
lacked the social skills that are needed to succeed in society and there was
no one I really could look to that could relate to my situation. Eventually,
life took over and I became a dad, which is my most proudest moment. I
had the opportunity to give my son everything my dad took from me. I put
my dreams on hold and today he's in college in Kansas. Two years ago I
moved to SoCal to pursue the dreams I had 20+ years ago.

General

I will have no issues answering questions someone might have concerning
my past. I know some people will not be able to go beyond what happened
in my life when I was a child. I understand and accept that. I just feel that I
can bring a lot of intangible qualities to the table. I also understand that I do
not have my paralegal degree yet but it is a work in progress. I am just looking
for the opportunity to get started while I finish the degree. I would be willing
to begin on an intern basis, if need be, to get started.
