RE: Director of Utah Mountain School (UMS)

Dear Sir,

Construction
My grandfather was contractor in the housing industry. My father was a cabinet maker and finish carpenter. My older brother was a contractor as well. When I returned from my mission, instead of following the family tradition, I decided to go to college. But I have worked in construction on about a hundred homes. I took the opportunity to go to Alaska after the big earthquake, where I worked on industrial buildings and high-rise buildings, made of steel, concrete, pre-stressed concrete panels and steel panel, as a journey-man carpenter. I worked in construction in Alaska to fund attending college; I attended the University of Arizona in Tempe, AZ. I could have followed the family tradition and become a general contractor; instead, I became a Professor.

After I graduated with a BS in Accounting, I continued to build spec housing on the side, by myself. I was not making enough as an accountant and I knew I could make a lot of money building homes. By myself and sometimes with employees, I built a four-plex, a duplex, and two nice size residential homes in Anchorage, Alaska. On the residential housing that I built, I did 100% of all the plumbing, heating duct work, and electrical wiring. I can read architectural drawings and building plans.

I am a combination of Construction, Education, and Business Executive.

From Construction, I know the three trades, carpentry, plumbing, and electrical, from the foundation to crown on the roof; including the industrial construction using pre-stressed concrete panels or steel panels.

I have had a long and successful career in higher education, and I know I can help contribute to the success of the students at Utah Mountain School by bringing what I have learned in my business career in the last 15 years, as a business executive, into the classroom at Utah Mountain School. I taught Financial Accounting and other business courses at Anchorage Community College, as an Accounting Teacher, then as an Associate Professor; after that, I worked my way all the way up to the rank of Professor of Accounting at the University of Anchorage Alaska.

I am also a CPA and for the last 15 years, I have been working as a business executive as a Controller or Chief Financial Officer (CFO)

I have authored Continuing Professional Educational (CPE) courses for the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) and
One of those courses focused on the analytical procedures needed by business and by Charter Schools
o I have a K-12 Principals Certification
I wrote a book entitled, Understanding How a Nonprofit Works.
o I am well acquainted with working with nonprofit organizations, including schools
I also wrote the lead article in the Ensign Magazine in September of 2007 about how young adults, (college students) can finance their college degree and avoid debt.

I hold out myself, first as an educator, and second, as an expert in content in the fields of Accounting and Finance. Please refer to my Summary of Credits, (attached). In my PhD. Program I have 350 college credits with about 230 graduate credits in the field of education. I am well educated, learning how to teach, how to develop curriculum, how to evaluate courses and motivating students; things that have made me a better Professor.

Interaction with Boards of Directors
In all my work with nonprofits and for profits and as a CPA, either as CFO or as an auditor, almost every activity ended with a report to the Board of Directors. I understand how a board is supposed to work and how some boards are different, it depends on the members of the board. Primarily, all boards provide oversight and guidance to management.

Audits and Auditors
There are two sides to every audit. One view is from the prospective of the auditor and the other one is the organization being audited. I have 3-years of experience, as an auditor and as a CPA I have 15-years of experience managing audits from the organizations point of view.

Budgeting in an Educational Environment
Just before I went back to school for my Masters Degree, I worked as the Assistant to the Provost, at Utah State University in the Budget Department.
I have used that knowledge of budgeting as a CPA and also when I functioned as a Finance Director, Controller and CFO. The budget, was one of my primary duties.

Cash Flow
While working for nonprofit organizations when I was the CFO, it was of vital importance to know the cash position. I accomplished that by developing a system that when updated properly, could project the cash status on a daily basis. Presenting a Cash Flow Analysis to the board on a quarterly basis will not be difficult.

Policies
The International Standards Organization (ISO) in Geneva has compiled best practices for organizational management and publishes them as International Quality Standards. The most world-wide applicable Standard is ISO-9001:2000. For one of the nonprofits that I served as CFO, I wrote and documented all of the organizations policies and I work with that nonprofit until it achieved ISO certification, it took the best part of six months but it helped the nonprofit qualify for certain grants.

Utahs Core Standards Curriculum
I am very familiar with Utahs Core Standards for education. And, I can research any question and provide detailed answers to the Boards questions. The Core Standards have changed education in Utah, for the better.

The Mission Statement of Utah Mountain School
The mission statement set Utah Mountain School (UMS) apart from other schools. If the mission statement was the same as other schools, it is likely that UMS would never been approved by the State. It provides an alternative to public schools. By creating an outdoor curriculum UMS is saying, we are different. The Acute Aerobic Exercise deals with the influence that the body has over the mind; to incorporate it into the daily lives of students, is revolutionary. To achieve the desired results will require the selection of teachers who will buy into curriculum.

SISNA/IKANO Communications, Inc., Controller 8/1999 - 1/2001

My Proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
I also am a CPA and Excel is the accountant and auditors best friend. Because Excel can do almost anything, most people only focus on what they need for their job. When they change jobs, they may need to learn something else to effectively use Excel. When I attended graduate school, as graduate student, I taught Excel, Word, and PowerPoint for a couple of semesters. I am still learning; I consider myself to be highly proficient using Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.

Thanks for your consideration and for allowing me to complete for this position.

With regards,
