OVERVIEW:
• 20 years as counselor and counseling supervisor in agencies and private practice
• 14 years as counselor educator and supervisor in universities
• 5 years as interpersonal and organizational skills trainer for Veteran’s Affairs.
Professional Counselor. Performed professional counseling for individuals, groups, couples, and families. Performed assessments, evaluations, and career counseling. Specializations included women’s issues, substance abuse, and diversity issues. Building the practice necessitated doing public relations, public speaking, and professional association/community leadership. Interfaced with probation, Department of Social Services, and probate court. 20 years 1979-1999
Counseling Supervisor. Developed and administered highly rated training and supervision program for newly graduated counselors pursuing licensure. Program reached beyond counseling practice into instruction in public relations and leading workshops to promote mental health more broadly and to solicit clients. Live supervision, audiotaping, videotaping, phone-ins, and case consultation were used as part of counseling training. 12 years (overlapping counseling work above) 1986-1999
Program Chair, and Associate, Assistant, and Adjunct Professor. Used real world expertise to develop new and ground-breaking master’s and doctoral programs, develop standards, curriculum, & processes, and conduct hiring and admissions. Led the program, 20 faculty, and 100+ students; designed and taught courses; and conducted program evaluation research. Provided ongoing professional development training for faculty and students. Inspired professionals-in-training to pursue the optimal in their career aspirations by bringing cutting edge, successful, real world examples and counseling practice into the classroom. Received top teacher award from Radford University Faculty Development Center. Also, during my tenure, field supervisors’ ratings of our graduates increased to “outstanding,” outshining ratings of graduates from other programs. 14 years 1993-2007
Leadership Trainer. Taught life and work skills to Veteran’s Affairs leadership around the country, including such topics as communication, conflict resolution, values-based leadership, decision-making. Facilities where we led these trainings significantly exceeded the performance of those without. 4 years 2007-2012

Well prepared to design and evaluate counseling training as evidenced in twenty-two articles and six book chapters related to interpersonal skills and functioning, adult development, diversity, ethical development, spirituality, diagnosis, and counselor competence, published in national peer- reviewed journals and by well-known publishers. Publications include a five-year study on the relationship between adult development and professional competence. Sixteen other articles published in other professional journals and newsletters.
