Summary: I am a Hunter College graduate with a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature and Philosophy. I have finished with a 3.7 GPA. I held the President position of the Hunter College Chess Club for two consecutive years. I am fluent in English and Russian, but am particularly specialized in teaching in English.

Academic Education: Four years of various courses in Hunter College.

Work Experience: Private chess coach of individual students and groups (including lessons at Hunter College) for 3 years, Office Support Worker for several months.

Chess Education: I started playing rated chess on C------------ almost 6 years ago, and knew almost nothing about the game. I’ve played maybe 100,000 games. I’ve trained with strong masters. I continue to play competitive and online games for as long as 6 hours a day. I train against strong experts like Danny Feng and national masters like Azeez Alade. I’ve done well against NM-strength players (40% win), proving that I can often hold my own against 2200’s. During the time of my chess development, I’ve used many resources, such as books by great players, YouTube videos by strong masters, and a great number of hours spent studying the game through a chess engine.

Historical Education: I underwent a rigorous research period devoted almost entirely to understanding the origins of the game of chess, including the old variants of the game (such as Chaturanga) with different piece arrangements and rules. I know almost everything about the historical evolution of modern chess, starting from its origins around the Victorian Era, to the most famous players and styles of the game, to the gradual expansion of known book theory (such as the tension between Capablanca’s classical school of chess and Nimzowitch’s hypermodern school), and, of course, to the modern-day emphasis on computers.

Skills:

I’m very experienced with various important chess aspects, such as pawn structure, piece dynamics, tempo, king safety, tactics, opening theory (such as the Sicilian, French, Nimzo-Indian, King’s Indian, etc.), mating patterns, sacrifices, and overall positional understanding (particularly in the middlegame and endgame).

I know how to teach the ‘language’ of chess to weaker players. Certain philosophical ideas, such as ‘necessity’ and ‘causality’, play a great role in understanding chess thinking, and I can simplify them to make sense for any student. I also have a wealth of theoretical knowledge on openings.

I was capable of maintaining a leadership role (President) in the Hunter Chess Club, and was employed as the official chess teacher of Hunter College. My focus has been on constantly increasing general interest in the game on campus, and I have over 250 members in my FB group.

I’m well-versed in both literary and professional language, such as complex philosophical and poetic texts – I’m knowledgeable in the practice of simplifying complicated words and ideas for a younger audience.

I can use my profound historical knowledge of the game and its players to both invigorate the teaching process and involve my students in the rich background of the game, such as the personal stories, personalities, and games of great masters.

My Life Philosophy:

My life has ultimately and permanently been tied to the game. I strive to be a strong grandmaster someday. I envision a better world for everyone that wants to improve. Through my spiritual and philosophical observations, I have come to realize that activities like chess can greatly improve one’s mental and emotional character – and enrich their lives. This is why I think myself a good candidate for any chess and/or teaching career. My spiritual and moral upbringing from childhood is now reflected in my relationship to children, since I am very loving and tolerant of their personalities, and have utmost respect for all kids who care to learn chess.
