KAMII Farm Manager for 2022 Growing Season
(February 1, 2022 - November 30, 2022)
The Food Justice and Sustainability Program at KAM Isaiah Israel is seeking a highly motivated individual for the 2022 growing season to fill the paid position of Farm Manager. This is a terrific opportunity for anyone who has gardening and or farming experience, a love for teaching, a passion for growing food and community, for sustainable urban land use and for food and eco justice. The successful candidate will be working with a wonderful group of experienced growers, helping those in need in the community and making connections and strengthening relationships within the Chicago urban ag world.
Program Description:
The KAMII Food Justice and Sustainability Program maintains micro-farms and micro- food forests in Hyde Park, at KAMII Synagogue and Kenwood United Church of Christ. All locations grow organic fruits and vegetables for local hot meal programs, food pantries, and senior centers. The focus of the program is transforming unproductive urban lawns into food-producing micro-farms and micro-food forests, growing, and donating food, teaching urban agriculture and sustainability skills, and advocating for a healthy, local food system and responsible energy, land and water use.
Position Description:
The Farm Manager oversees all growing and related activities, including planning and coordinating all work sessions, volunteer tasks and work schedules, as well as all planting, tending, harvesting, and distribution. The Farm Manager also maintains productivity records, writes the weekly farm report, sources all needed materials, is responsible for all weekly irrigation for all sites, and from time to time represents the program at various on-site and local events. The Farm Manager also leads a regular
crew of 5-10 volunteers each Sunday, and on some evening weekends during the growing season from February through November, as well as the occasional outside group of volunteers. The Farm Manager works directly and collaboratively with Food Justice & Sustainability chair Aidan Kaplan.
This season, the Farm Manager will also be responsible for managing the replanting and rehabilitation of growing space and a pollinator garden after recent construction.
The Ideal Candidate:

? Has strong communication and organizational skills
? Is connected to communities on Chicago’s South Side
? Is knowledgeable about native plants and horticulture
? Has experience in urban agriculture
? Is passionate about food justice and sustainability!
Time Commitment:
This position involves, on average, about 12 - 15 hours of work per week, from February through November. Of those, about 7-9 are on site, and 5-6 may be performed off site. The balance of on- and off-site work shifts over the course of the season, with more on-site work in the late spring and throughout the summer and early fall. On-site duties include the primary workday (Sundays), as well as turning on and off all drip irrigation systems, some weeknight work sessions (usually Tuesdays or Wednesdays) and delivering produce to recipients or coordinating its delivery. The other duties, which may be performed off-site, include planning, record keeping, administration and writing the weekly report.
Compensation:
Total compensation for the Farm Manager is $10,000 for the season, less all applicable tax withholding.
