Role Description

Organization Summary: GMCC has a 117-year history collaborating with communities to make a positive impact throughout Minnesota. Our initiatives and programs have included advocacy and education around equity and poverty; volunteerism and service learning; mentoring and youth development; support services for seniors; and food security. Today, GMCC is an entrepreneurial organization that partners with the communities most impacted by a challenge or opportunity to co-design and lead a response. We work in the areas of youth, food, and well-being.

Type: W2, estimated 6-10 hours per week
Hours: Approximately 5:45-8:15 Tuesday and Wednesday (possibly adding Mondays)
Date Range: T(possible M)-W Oct 25th - December 14th (14 total tutoring days)

Role Description
Tutor youth of all ages by providing homework help and learning/understanding school curricula twice week (Tuesday/Wednesday) from 10/24 - 12/14 (minus the week of Thanksgiving) (possible addition of Mondays)
5:45pm set up
6:00 - 8:00 tutoring and homework support
8-8:15 clean up
An additional 1-3 hours/week to engage with parents (if needed) and GMCC/Abubakar staff about program content, operations, and evaluation
Work/coordinate with Lead and other Tutors to support students with homework and tutoring
Document number and demographics of students served and complete follow-up/evaluation rubrics and meetings with GMCC staff

Approach
Use a strengths-based approach (we believe that all youth have the capacity for genius - we are here to support and grow that genius).
Use a studio-learning approach (emphasize learning by doing, often through community-based design problems)

Qualifications
Comfortable teaching in a multi-cultural environment and in informal or formal educational spaces (classroom)
Understanding of Somali and Muslim culture
Experience working with youth
Understanding of subjects taught in middle and high school
Undergraduate degree or currently enrolled in college
