Norwalk River Rowing Association (NRRA), ??a 501(c)(3) non-profit dedicated to promoting a lifelong passion for rowing, regardless of age or income, is seeking a coach for its high school/juniors program.


Position available:

Assistant varsity coach.


Logistics:

During the spring and fall, practice is held weekdays 4–7 p.m. and Saturdays 9 a.m.–12 p.m. at NRRA’s spacious 6,000+ sqft boathouse on the Norwalk River (1 Moodys Lane, Norwalk). Winter training is held off-site in the neighborhood during that same 4–7 p.m. time block. Summer training is held on the water with variable hours. As with all competitive clubs, races during the spring and fall seasons will occur on weekends, with the potential of the occasional Sunday regatta.


Responsibilities:

• Foster a life-long love of rowing in athletes and promote a healthy, safe environment for all;
• Teach rowers technique, competition, and teamwork;
• Provide an inclusive and equitable experience for all athletes;
• Assist the head coach in the preparation of daily lineups and workouts;
• Recruit both experienced and novice athletes, with an emphasis on those for whom an athletic experience and intervention will promote positive off-the-water life choices and outcomes;
• Run safe, effective practices on and off the water;
• Operate a small launch and practice safe boat handling;
• Lift up to 50lbs overhead;
• Travel with the team to regattas when possible;
• Assist with general boathouse, equipment, and facility maintenance; and
• Ensure all aspects of rowing safety (both on the water and on land)
• These responsibilities are neither exclusive nor exhaustive of responsibilities.

If desired, coaching may also extend to the masters’ programs (experienced rowers 6:30 a.m.; learn-to-row in the evenings from roughly April to October). Compensation would increase accordingly.

Once hired, the candidate must
• submit to background checks;
• maintain USRowing SafeSport certification;
• have a valid CT boating license; and
• maintain first aid/CPR/AED certification.


Qualifications:

• Preference will be given to those candidates with a(n)
• Knowledge of both sweep and sculling technique;
• Demonstrated passion for the sport;
• Background in competitive rowing;
• Experience coaching youth or collegiate rowing;
• Understanding of positive youth development principles;
• Commitment athletes’ academic success and socio-emotional well-being;
• History of recruiting new athletes, especially from groups historically under-represented in rowing;
• Ability to communicate;
• Skills in organizational/logistical operations;
• Grasp of boathouse operations and rowing equipment;
• USRowing Level 1, 2, or 3 coaching certification; and/or
• Clean driver’s license and experience driving a shell trailer.

About us:

A community-based, 501(c)(3) non-profit rowing club with athletes 11–84 years old, NRRA draws athletes primarily from the Fairfield County area, with a few each from Westchester County and from New Haven County. Formed in 1986 as Fairfield County’s first rowing club, NRRA currently has over eighty junior athletes, a number that is expected to continue increasing over the next few years.
