Architectural Associate

About the Firm
- Our firm is focused primarily on residential architecture and project management - helping homeowners, contractors and other designers create functional, livable, and beautiful renovations, additions and new homes.
- We are currently a three person team, looking for a person with strong computer drafting and modeling skills to help us with documentation and design, and who will help us grow and improve the work we do.
- We work out of offices in our homes in Belmont, Cambridge, and the Back Bay, and we travel to peoples homes to meet with clients and contractors and to document existing structures. Most of our projects are located in the Metro Boston area.

The Ideal Candidate
- Has particular interest working on smaller scale, primarily residential design projects.
- Is excited to work for a small firm that values open communication, self evaluation, and constant improvement of personal performance and team workflows. Responsibilities will increase quickly as you learn our systems and develop your skills.
- Is consistently detail-oriented and meticulous, in the habit of double checking work to minimize mistakes.
- Has the ability to set up focused, distraction-free work blocks to produce high quality work efficiently. The position requires working remotely and independently for a significant number of hours each week, and regularly scheduled deliverables.
- Can set up a small quiet office area at home or some other convenient location with a computer and multiple screens. (We will provide hardware and software as needed.)
- Has a strong working knowledge of 3D modeling, preferably Trimble Sketch Up and Layout.
- Possibly helpful but not critical:
- Has experience with residential design or construction, e.g. working in the trades or as a contractor.
- Has transportation available to get to meeting locations and project sites.

Responsibilities
- Model existing structures and spaces in Trimble Sketchup.
- Develop existing conditions drawing, and assist in developing design drawings in Trimble Layout.
- Make site visits to take measurements and photographs.
- Eventually, develop designs and drawings for renovation, addition, and new construction projects.
- Eventually, work independently with clients and manage design projects.
- Accurately and consistently track time to allow for project billing and cost tracking.

Well provide training as needed. Specific prior experience is less important than a willingness to learn and improve.

Work Schedule & Logistics
- Initially, this will be a part time hourly position with a guaranteed minimum of 20 hours per week. Additional hours and/or a move to full time will be discussed based on the progress of the training, and your ability to take on billable project work.
- For certain candidates with skills and experience that allow for a quick ramp up into billable project work, we are open to discussing alternate arrangements and/or immediate full time employment.
- There will be an initial 4 month training and evaluation period during which well gauge your ability to learn the skills required for the job. This is to be considered a trial period to determine whether you are a good fit for our firm and if our firm is a good fit for you.
- The typical week will be structured to include set virtual team meetings to review ongoing work, and discuss any questions or issues.
- Outside of the set meeting times, there will be some other scheduled work activities (e.g. site visits, client meetings, etc.) but for the most part youll be working remotely and independently.
- We have a goal of meeting at least once a month in person for discussions and work sessions, and are evaluating the potential for more frequent in person meetings.

Compensation
- Hourly wage based on experience and skills
- Paid time off
- Stipends for computer, cell phone, and transportation (depending on your specific situation)
- Eventually, potential for profit sharing (our firm practices open book management)

Application
- Please submit your resume, a cover letter, and work samples. Well contact promising candidates to arrange an interview.
- In your cover letter, please tell us:
- What are some of the reasons youd like to work on smaller scale residential design and construction projects (rather than larger scale commercial projects)?
- How do you structure your day to stay productive?
- What was a good book youve read lately? (could be any kind of book - a novel, technical manual, a picture book you read to your kids)
- Please include two or more work samples. Examples could include:
- Trimble Sketchup model files
- Trimble Layout drawing files
- Screenshots of 3d models
- PDFs of design drawings or technical drawings
