Assistant Teacher

Immediate Supervisor: Lead Teacher

DHS Requirements (as of 2016, DHS 970):

An Assistant Teacher shall meet one of the following qualifications:

1. Have a Post-secondary credential in child development associate program or associate of arts degree and certificate in early childhood education, and six months experience working in an early childhood program; or
2. Two years (sixty credits) of post-secondary education plus six months working in an early childhood program and nine credits – semester equivalent approved child development or early childhood training courses.

NAEYC Requirements (as of 2016):

1. Have at least a Child Development Associate Credential (CDA) or equivalent. Equivalent is defined as: A minimum of 12 college credits (semester hours) in early childhood education, child development, elementary education, or early childhood special education that encompass the following: child development and learning of children birth through kindergarten; family and community relationships; observing, documenting, and assessing young children; teaching and learning; and professional practices and development. 2. Be working on either a CDA credential awarded by the Council for Professional Recognition or the equivalent [OR]
3. Meet one of the Candidacy requirements for teachers.

MBP Requirements:

1. The individual must meet DHS Requirements, NAEYC and MBP General Job Requirements.

Expectations:

In addition to abiding by the policies and procedures set forth in the employee manual, and “Goals and Actions,” the assistant teacher job consists of the following expectations and duties. Employees will be evaluated by and pay raises possibly determined by the “Goals and Actions” and the following specific expectations. The assistant teacher should also be able to perform additional responsibilities, tasks, and duties as assigned by his/her supervisor, director, and/or requested by the Mililani Baptist Church Pastor.


I. GOAL 1: Employee Development
a. Assist the teacher in all facets of learning and anticipates the needs of the teacher.
b. Assume and/or complete delegated responsibilities and tasks from the lead teacher.
c. Complete work in an efficient manner.
d. Fulfill a leadership role in the classroom in the absence of the lead teacher.
e. Teach subject areas assigned by the lead teacher in an appropriate and engaging way.

II. GOAL 2: Environments
a. Contribute to the development of a spirit of team unity, mutual respect, and healthy conflict management with staff working in the classroom.

III. GOAL 3: Living out and sharing the Gospel
a. Contribute to a working environment that displays Christian love amongst all staff working in the classroom.

IV. GOAL 4: Quality education
a. Complete lesson plans in assigned subject area, including listed objectives, materials, procedures, and assessments in a timely manner.
b. Reinforce the classroom Lead Teacher’s lessons and learning concepts with the children.
