Support Provider

The Sorensen family is seeking a housemate/companion/live-in support provider for their son, Raimee, who is 26 years old and lives in a 2-bedroom house on a small flower farm in western Chapel Hill, near the village of Saxapahaw.

The right candidate will be someone who enjoys working with individuals with developmental disabilities and who has a desire to help Raimee learn the skills that he needs to be as independent as possible. In addition to having independent living experience (enough so that they can teach independent living skills to someone else), applicants will need to possess the following skills:

A good sense of humor and enthusiasm for life
Be organized and a self-starter, able to create a system of schedules and a process manual for successful independent living (with support from Raimee’s parents and support community)
Able to facilitate social integration and foster communication
A willingness to draw Raimee into your social circle as well as becoming a part of his friendship community
An understanding of how to teach through positive modeling and active participation in the care of the home and surrounding property
A love of outdoor activities, cooking, music, theater
An ability to teach activities of daily living (hygiene, menu planning, budgeting, leisure skills, shopping, home/yard maintenance, cooking)
Ability to define, create, and implement a schedule
Clear, concise notes delivered to the service agency in a timely manner
Frequent communication with parents and service providers
Able to provide transportation and have a clean driving record (vehicle available at times)
Willingness to organize and host social gatherings
Minimum 1 year commitment preferred
Create a warm and welcoming home environment for both yourself and for Raimee, one that offers a sense of joy, belonging, acceptance, expectation, and love

Weekday hours include Mon-Fri mornings until 8:00/9am, depending on the season, and Mon, Wed, & Thurs evenings from 5-11pm, with flexibility. 10-20 weekend hours, also with flexibility.

Especially important is the understanding that this is a significant transitional time for Raimee; the right candidate will be helping to establish a foundation for lifelong growth as an independent adult. We strongly desire to find a housemate who has the ability to teach life skills while simultaneously cultivating a friendship, and has the experience and capacity to acknowledge the value and commitment that this role requires. This is an independent contractor position; pay is approximately $30,000/year- which includes rent and utilities.
