Position Type / Expected Hours of Work:

This is a seasonal position. Camp counselors supervise campers during the following time frames:

 

Monday Jun 17th 3:00pm- 10 pm (awake time pay @ $17.00)

10:00- Midnight (Sleep time pay @ $10.00)

 

Tuesday June 18th

12:01-7:00 am (sleep time pay @$10.00)

7:01 am-9:00 am (awake time pay @$17.00) off until 3:00 pm. (may stay at camp or leave if you prefer)

3:00pm- 10:00 Pm (awake time pay at $17.00)

10:00- Midnight (Sleep time pay @ $10.00)

 

Wednesday June 19th

12:01-7:00 am (sleep time pay @$10.00)

7:01 am-9:00 am (awake time pay @$$17.00) off until 3:00 pm. (may stay at camp or leave if you prefer)

3:00pm- 10:00 Pm (awake time pay at $17.00)

10:00- Midnight (Sleep time pay @ $10.00

Summary: 

As a Camp Counselor, the primary responsibility is to guide campers during afternoon and evening sessions, fostering a supportive environment that encourages friendship and socialization among peers. This entails facilitating various activities and opportunities that promote teamwork, creativity, and personal growth. Additionally, the Camp Counselor is required to stay onsite overnight, providing continuous support and assistance to campers as needed, ensuring their well-being and addressing any concerns or requirements that may arise during their stay.

Essential Functions:

The essential functions of this position include:

 

  • Provide leadership for campers and peers.
  • Lead all evening program activities (Waterfront, Challenge Course, Archery, Arts and Crafts, Drama and Music).
  • Assist campers with minimal activities of daily living.
  • Resolve camper disputes in an appropriate manner and in accordance with camp policies.
  • Assist the Youth Services Employment Specialist in attending with emergencies/incidents following camp policies.
  • Assist with loading and unloading of vehicles.
  • Report any unusual incidents involving campers and report any suspected injuries or illnesses.
  • Assist with oversight of camper med administration. 

Education/Talent Requirements:

  • High school graduate (diploma) or GED required.
  • Ability to read, write and perform basic mathematics at a high school level.
  • Ability to lead and teach with empathy and dignity for a diverse group of individuals, including those who may require additional accommodations and/or considerations. 

 

Work Experience Requirements:

  • Minimum one-year prior work experience in a professional role where primary duties included some form of mentorship, teaching, and/or training responsibilities. 
  • Previous experience mentoring teens in career development roles preferred.
  • Must be able to conduct daily duties with little to no supervision; prior experience demonstrating strong, individual work ethic with a high level of self-management, a plus.

 

Travel: 

No travel required. 

 

Work Environment: 

This position involves working closely with others in a professional and friendly manner, necessitating strong interpersonal skills. The majority of the workday is spent outdoors in a camp setting, providing opportunities for hands-on interaction with nature and facilitating outdoor activities. Camp counselors should be prepared to adapt to various weather conditions, including exposure to both hot and cold temperatures, as well as inclement weather such as rain or wind. Additionally, this role often includes staying overnight in a rustic camp setting, immersing counselors in the camp experience and fostering close bonds with campers and fellow staff members.

 

Physical Demands of the Job

In this role, the employee will engage in a range of physical activities essential for effective camp counseling. Much of the work involves continuous mobility and interaction, necessitating frequent movement to mentor campers and collaborate with fellow counselors. This entails walking, standing, and at times jogging to oversee activities, organize games, and ensure the safety and well-being of campers. Active participation in camp activities alongside campers is also vital, promoting camaraderie and leading by example in sports, hiking, swimming, and other recreational pursuits. Flexibility is key, as the physical demands of the job may vary based on planned activities, environmental conditions, and camper needs, requiring the employee to adapt their exertion levels while maintaining enthusiasm and energy. Embracing these physical demands contributes to the success of the camp program, fosters teamwork, and creates memorable experiences for campers.
