DEFINITION

A Tour Guide gives tours to visitors at one of the three museum sites: Fairlawn Mansion, the SS

Meteor Maritime Museum, or the Old Firehouse & Police Museum. When not giving tours a

Tour Guide does a variety of tasks including clerical work and housekeeping.

TYPICAL TASKS

1. Provide guided tours to visitors in accordance with the script provided
2. While on shift when no visitors are waiting for tours, the following might be assigned: a. Answer telephones and direct calls b. Type miscellaneous letters, memos, etc. using the computer c. Perform cashiering functions for admissions and Gift Shop sales d. Clean the museum site, restrooms; empty trash containers e. Perform miscellaneous duties as assigned by the Site Supervisor, the Museum Coordinator, or the Executive Director

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

Knowledge

Some knowledge of giving oral presentations to a group of 20 or less and answering questions

Working knowledge of cash handling and accounting

Abilities
Ability to:

Establish and maintain an effective relationship with staff and the public

Speak in front of a small group following a script

Climb stairs and/or ladders and be on your feet for extended periods

Work in an environment with minimal climate control

Operate a cash register

Provide excellent customer service

Perform word processing

REQUIREMENTS

Training and Experience

Any combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain this knowledge and these abilities would be:

Giving tours on campus to prospective students

Participating in theater, forensics, or another activity in which clear communication before an audience occurs

No experience is required. Some experience with public contact is desirable.

Individuals will be trained in giving tours in the SPM museums.

Experience with the use of a computer is very desirable

POSITION

FLSA Non-Exempt – temporary, part-time, hourly wage, hours as scheduled; Non-Benefited

Job Type: Part-time

Salary: From $11.00 per hour
