Mariposa Kids Afterschool Recreation Leader II Job Description

Under the guidance of the Program Director, the Recreation Leader II will assist with the implementation of Mariposa Kids After School Program (ASP). The Program Director is responsible for helping to maintain a safe, clean site; ensuring a high level of program quality and working to establish a positive relationship with all program participants, their families, and Mariposa Kids staff. The Recreation Leader II will be a positive role model to youth with an emphasis on Youth Development � including each student�s personal, social, emotional and intellectual development.

Compensation & Hours:

$18.00 per hour
Hours vary depending on the school schedule (due to minimum days, school vacations or staff training). Hours vary from 12 - 22 hours/week.
Typical Schedule: Mon-Fri from 2-6pm, and Wednesdays 1-6pm.
Opportunities for more hours during Holiday and Summer Camps.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

- Supervise the children, with first priority in their safety.
- Participate and encourage positive participation of all students in daily activities and events, while providing Youth Development opportunities.
- Lead organized learning activities for students to develop and strengthen their academic, physical, and social skills.
- Co-lead a variety of enriching and age appropriate activities as assigned by the Program Director. Activities may include but are not limited to academic, physical, reading, homework and games.
- As needed, differentiate lessons and activities so they are appropriate for students of various ages and with various abilities.
- Participate in and evaluate the effectiveness of activities and events.
- Instruct students on the safe and proper use of supplies and equipment.
- Implement positive discipline techniques and group management.
- Report observations and incidents (e.g. discipline, accidents, inappropriate social behavior, etc.) to Program Director.
- Participate in cleaning and maintaining the facilities and equipment. This includes but is not limited to washing dishing, cleaning restrooms, sweeping & mopping floors, wiping down tables, picking up toys, - organizing supplies, and bi-annual deep cleaning of facilities.
- Inspect the clubhouse and the equipment for potential safety hazards; taking corrective action to prevent injuries.
- Interact professionally and appropriately with children, parents, teachers, school staff, community members, and co-workers.
- Assist in maintaining student attendance and participation records.
Comply with special schedule changes and off site events including field trips as assigned by the Program Director.
- Attend and participate in staff meetings, mandatory trainings, and other Mariposa Kids events such as parent night, and special events as required by the program.
- Collaborate with Mariposa Kids staff for the purpose of implementing and maintaining all Mariposa Kids services and/or programs.
- Maintain confidentiality for all Mariposa Kids clients including but not limited to students, families, community members, and staff.
- Comply with all Mariposa Kids policies and procedures.
- Complete all other relevant duties assigned by your supervisor.

Qualifications:

- 18 years of age or older
- Background in education and/or experience working/volunteering with children
- Must be able to obtain TB test and health screening clearance before start date, and be fully vaccinated against COVID-19
- Pass criminal background check
- Current First Aid and CPR certification or be willing to obtain within 2 months of employment

Skills:

- Loves working with children!
- Experience with leading children/youth activities
- Knowledge of youth/children programs
- Ability to work as a team member in a dynamic, complex environment and organize time and workload effectively
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with all levels of staff, the public and program participants while maintaining objectivity
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, participants and parents
- Demonstrated problem solving ability
- Experience in behavioral management with kids
- Exhibits a positive attitude
- Can readily adapt in changing situations/circumstances

Physical Ability:

Requirements include strength, mobility, stamina to climb, bend, stretch, stand, kneel, walk, stoop, extend legs, and stamina to lift, carry, push or pull objects, which weigh 40 pounds. Ability to reach horizontally and vertically with arms. Physical ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time. Generally the job requires 20% sitting, 30% walking or active, and 50% standing.
