A Parental Coach focuses on the goal of enhancing and improving permanency outcomes for parents with Cognitive Impairment (possible Intellectual or Developmental Disabilities) who have been referred for parent training support through the Administration for Children Services (ACS). Parental Coaches are role models who provide guidance based on a combination of training and personal first-hand experience. Empowering and coaching parents through the process with ACS, the courts, and other system representatives is an important aspect of this work.

Specific description of duties

  • Develop a trusting relationship with assigned parents.
  • Regular contact and visits with parents.
  • Support parents in developing positive parenting skills.
  • Support parents with treatment services and community resources as needed.
  • Support parents in making positive choices.
  • Empower parents to advocate for themselves and their family.
  • Advocate for parents by attending court proceedings as requested.
  • Coach parents in understanding the boundaries and expectations of ACS.
  • Attend court and /or meetings as support when requested by parents.
  • Attend regular conferences with program supervisor.
  • Attend scheduled mentor support group meetings.
  • Document contacts and visits with parents via daily progress notes.
  • Attend all trainings as required.
  • Maintain confidential information.
  • Facilitate training as required.
  • Participate in advisory committees as required.
  • Models and encourages direct, professional communication.
  • Ensure parents are trained in all areas of requirement, to facilitate successful achievement on expected goals.

Qualifications:

  • Must have at least one-year experience in providing supports and services through ACS or OPWDD or in a human services capacity.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in human services preferred. (A combination of experience and education will be considered)

Additional Requirements:

  • Passing a criminal background check
  • Complete all trainings as required by the Office for People with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD)
  • Review HIPAA requirements and view “Secure It” video
  • Ability to travel to meet assigned clients in your region
