We look to hire and develop team players who demonstrate individual initiative and embrace new challenges and learning opportunities.

Job Description

BEM has an excellent opportunity for an Engineer/Geologist/Environmental Scientist Internship position to support the Remediation group in Alaska. Our growing backlog of challenging projects throughout Alaska has created an exciting opportunity for a student intern interested in the fields of environmental science and site remediation. These projects consist of primarily long-term monitoring and remedial investigation at areas throughout Alaska, including remote locations. As a result, we are looking for a seasonal (May-August) intern currently enrolled in an environmental-related science or engineering university program.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support the field lead and project managers on field investigations (soil, groundwater, sediment, surface water). This may include using field sampling and testing equipment, GPS and iPad equipment for data collection, and documenting field measurements under the direction of a Qualified Environmental Professional or Qualified Sampler.
  • Provide office support for projects, including supporting the preparation of permits, work plans, and technical reports. Strong analytical skills to synthesize field and laboratory data for purposes of interpretation, distilling trends, comparison against regulatory standards, and drawing conclusions are preferred.

Requirements

  • Enrolled in an environmental-related science or engineering university program.
  • Proficient with MSWord, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook software.

Abilities and Skills

  • Self-motivated team player.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to travel in small aircraft, helicopters, and/or four-wheelers.
  • Commitment to safe work practices.
  • Ability to obtain the necessary background security clearances to active military installations.
  • Ability to perform well under pressure and within established deadlines.
  • Ability to work extra hours to accommodate the work load (May-August).
  • Ability to carry objects up to 50 pounds.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license and clean driving record.

Compensation and Benefits:

This is a temporary, non-exempt hourly position with overtime eligibility. BEM will pay for various certifications and educational training to assist in advancing the intern’s knowledge and are specific to the projects they will be supporting.

The majority of work will be conducted in Alaska during the peak of the field season May through August. However, there may be training that will be required prior to field work such as the use of specific field equipment, HAZWOPER, and CPR/First Aid. As a result, depending on the training schedule, the intern may be required to take select training in April, prior to field work starting.

This position is hourly with a minimum of 24 hours a week. There may be weeks where students will be working 50 hours a week in Fairbanks or various remote radar sites. In these situations, housing, transportation, and per diem will be provided.
