Middle School English Language Arts Teaching Position

Sunset Ridge School is seeking a dynamic educator with experience in reading and writing instruction, preferably using a collaborative, progressive and multi-modal approach to reading and writing the world.  Educators at Sunset Ridge, particularly literacy teachers, engage in the work they expect of students. They are readers, writers and critical thinkers.

Sunset Ridge teachers are expected to:

  • Create a safe, purposeful classroom environment that prioritizes learning and centers student growth and self-discovery.
  • Possess knowledge of culturally-sustaining pedagogies and an understanding of equity, privilege and intersectionality- and how those shape our understanding of the world.
  • Collaborate with other teachers, instructional leaders, and partners to ensure instruction meets the needs of students’ varied, unique needs.
  • Think beyond didactic curriculum to ensure personalization, multi-modal learning, and choice throughout units for student engagement, participation and growth beyond classroom walls.
  • Assess students regularly in a variety of ways, analyze that data, and determine appropriate next steps for instruction.
  • Ensure that instruction meets the needs of all students, including students with special needs and students performing below grade level, without framing students’ knowledge gaps in deficit language.
  • Build relationships and communicate regularly with students and their families to solicit input and share academic successes and challenges.
  • Engage in learning about issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion in education to examine your own biases; reflect on how those biases affect you, your students, and their families; and plan and deliver instruction in a culturally responsive way.
  • Maintain flexibility in supporting all students, including those with learning challenges and those with needs for extensive enrichment.
  • Investment in ongoing learning and professional development is required.
