Field Crew Chief

Location:

Big Island of Hawai’i

Job Overview:

The day-to-day job includes hard physical work in the elements, often navigating difficult terrain such as rain forest, fields of sharp lava, and very steep hills. After the field work is complete, the data collected for the day must be downloaded from a data collector to a laptop computer using Surveying Genius/Micro Survey software. The employee must then create a computerized rough draft of a map using AutoCAD software.

We use the latest cutting-edge technology and run one person crews. Oftentimes, people here with experience do survey work the old-fashioned way on a three-person crew and are not able to adapt to new technology or the latest land surveying equipment.

We are looking for someone who does not mind working alone outside in the field. This is not a job for a social person who loves being around people or someone who prefers to work indoors.

This is a career position which may lead to becoming a licensed professional land surveyor.

Requirements:

  • Must have a strong math aptitude and strong computer skills.

  • Analytical and critical thinking

  • Ability to read and create survey maps

  • Ability to use the latest high-tech surveying instruments: robotic total station, data collector, GPS, aerial drone, and aerial LiDAR system (We will train, but candidate needs to have an aptitude for learning this equipment)

  • Must have a drone pilots license or obtain one within 90 days of employment

  • Must be able to cut through thick brush using a machete and/or chainsaw

  • Must be able to carry all land surveying equipment and water in and out of each job site

  • A good sense of direction so you don't get lost walking around in the field

  • Must be able to relocate to the Big Island of Hawai’i

Prefer:

  • Experience with AutoCAD computer aided drafting software, land surveying software, and land surveying equipment (robotic total station, data collector, GPS, aerial drone, and aerial LiDAR system are a plus).

  • Prefer someone with a 2 to 4 year college degree in civil engineering, land surveying, geology, or related geo sciences.

Benefits:

  • This is a full-time position

  • 2 weeks paid vacation

  • 7 paid sick days

  • Pension plan after 3 years to equal 25% of salary for independent investment of your choice, so long as the SEP IRA qualifies with the federal government.
