Career Summary:


Tyler Sharp is currently a volunteer on a 18 acre organic vegetable farm in St. John, USVI. Prior to this position, he travelled independently after his 27 month Peace Corps Volunteer service in the peaceful Mountain Kingdom of Lesotho. Prior to joining the Peace Corps, he served as an active duty Naval Officer. He began his service in May 2010 and has served in the Surface Warfare Community and in the Meteorology and Oceanography Community where he earned multiple qualifications, a Master�s Degree, led a division of 40 personnel, managed $65,000 in training funds and was the Officer-in-Charge of 2 Hydrographic surveys.





June 2010 to November 2012: Electrical Division Officer, Assistant Engineer and Deck Division Officer, USS Crommelin (FFG 37), United States Navy


Managed 7 electricians resulting in completion of over 1,000 annual maintenance checks. Implemented and trained 220 personnel in shipboard electrical safety fundamentals to ensure all installed and personally owned electrical devices met safety standards.


Implemented a 560 line Plan of Action and Milestones that resulted in a passing score of a multiyear readiness inspection.


Led a division of 35 personnel in the daily maintenance of all shipboard operations systems, and over 30 safe and successful Sea and Anchor operations.





December 2012 to October 2013: Division Officer, Fleet Survey Team


Managed 8 civilians and enlisted personnel. Ensured training was properly administered, preventative maintenance on over $1.5 worth of specialized equipment was completed and all other requirements for the command mission were fulfilled.





November 2013 to July 2014: Expeditionary Officer and Officer-in-Charge, Fleet Survey Team


Responsible for the commands Expeditionary Survey requirements. Including training, equipment readiness and personal proficiency in Expeditionary Hydrographic Surveying.


Qualified 20 officers and enlisted sailors in Expeditionary Survey Vessel Qualifications and Expeditionary Surveys.


Pioneered a standard operating procedure that streamlined the collection time, software post-processing, collection method, and equipment configuration of the Expeditionary Surveys and Survey vessels. Resulting in decreased training time, and increased collection efficiency.


Led 2 Expeditionary Surveys leading 8 personnel in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii overseeing the completion of over 5 months or surveying, training, processing and product delivery to multinational customers.





August 2014 to July 2015: Graduate Student, Masters of Science in Hydrographic Science, University of Southern Mississippi


My graduate requirements included proposing a hydrographic survey, executing data acquisition, extensive data processing and compilation for bathymetric inventory. I familiarized with an array of sonar systems, tide gauge instrumentation, and GPS equipment. I was responsible for processing bathymetric data and generating post processed kinematic GPS solutions using software packages such as CARIS HIPS and SIPS and GrafNav. I produced CUBE and Swath Angle surfaces that were integrated into CARIS Base Editor to update applicable ENC information based on bathy data collection and shoreline delineation solutions.





August 2015 to September 2016: Department Head - Training Officer


Oversaw the development and implementation of training initiatives for Fleet Survey Team. Ensured 65 military and senior technical civilian personnel met over 700 training requirements, including requirements for 11 survey vessels and $12M worth of equipment deployed globally.


Executed the command�s $65,000 training budget, which included travel approvals, multi-disciplinary training courses, and budgeting for the upcoming fiscal year requirements.


September 2016 to November 2018: Lesotho, Southern Africa. Peace Corps Volunteer � Secondary Education Teacher.


Education volunteer serving 27 months in a rural mountain village in Lesotho.


Teaching math, science and life skills to 115 grade 8, 9 and 10 students ages 13-21.


My primary daily responsibilities include teaching 24 weekly lessons, lesson planning, testing, invigilating, and performance assessment for 115 students.


Secondary responsibilities consist of working with community, regional and national partners to teach HIV mitigation/awareness, best health practices, HIV testing and community capacity building.


Participating in animal husbandry activities and small scale vegetable production.


December 2018 to January 2021:


Community development in southern Africa, Michigan, the Caribbean and independent travel.


Six months bicycle riding through South Africa, Namibia and Angola. Engaging with community members in small scale agri-business education and best practice exchange.


Seven months and working on 300 plus acres of pasture land, forest, and marsh conducting trail and forest conservation, invasive species management and gardening.


February 2021 to Present:


Farm worker on 18 acre organic produce farm on St. John, USVI.


Practicing regenerative methods to increase soil health, higher harvest yields and nutrient content of vegetables.


Learning organic farming practices and sustainable methods of crop rotation, soil management and environmental stewardship.


Involved in daily activities of harvesting, planting, watering, weeding, packaging, customer service, delivery and farm management.
