Activities

Maryland Leadership Workshop - A week-long visit to Washington College in Maryland to take part in workshops that teach participants leadership skills. I chose to focus on workshops that pertained to bias and avoiding bias-- one class, Diversity, opened my eyes to the way misconceptions and unconscious bias affects those you lead and your abilities as a leader. I take this into account any time I am in a leadership position and have made a habit of finding all of my team members’ strengths.
Wilderness Adventure at Eagle Landing - A two- and three-week camping trip into the mountains of Virginia and West Virginia. We carried everything we needed on our backs, and learned valuable skills such as orienteering and plant identification. This camp challenged me to face some of my greatest fears, and tough it through harsh conditions. Some memorable moments of this camp consist of dropping everything we had to run down the side of a mountain during a storm. When we made it through the mud to our campsite, we celebrated by dancing in the rain and eating our best meal-- freeze-dried beef stroganoff. Another memorable moment of this camp was when I faced one of my biggest fears-- heights-- and leapt from a fifty-foot cliff into a reservoir. I was awarded the Golden Whistle award while at camp for making improvements in my attitude and abilities from one year to the next.
Taekwondo and Karate (Lee’s Taekwondo in Annapolis, MD and UKO Karate in Poulsbo, WA) - a combined three years of martial arts and a plan to continue training. From this, I’ve gained confidence and discipline for my daily life. I achieved the yellow belt in Taekwondo before taking up Karate. I plan to continue learning Karate so that I can reach my black belt.
Performing and Visual Arts - A magnet program offered in Anne Arundel County centered around the arts. I majored in acting, and also learned painting and production skills. I performed in plays and devised pieces of my own. I gained skills in organization and balancing different aspects of my life. I performed in “The Laramie Project” as the Baptist Minister. With only two weeks to prepare, as I was an emergency replacement, I delivered one of my best performances to date.
Girl Scouts of Central Maryland - I joined as a senior girl scout in troop 1344 of Annapolis, MD and remained for two years. In the short time I spent with Girl Scouts, I executed research projects on topics such as disabilities in America and teen suicide. I presented these projects to my troop and discussed with them different approaches and solutions to the issues. We went camping often and I furthered my understanding of wilderness survival, especially pertaining to different regions and environments.
Horse Harbor Foundation - I volunteer and take horseback riding lessons at a small rescue barn in Poulsbo, Washington. I help feed, groom, handle, and medicate injured and sick horses. I ride independently and with a class, roughly two to three times a week. I have taken on the goal and responsibility of training a horse with a bucking problem to respond to requests in an appropriate way. I have always loved horses and my time here has reignited my passion for them. From here, I hope to find a job in the equine industry and possible work to help with the management and humane treatment of wild horses.
