Abigail McGahey

Biomedical Engineering Major- Senior biomedical engineering student interested in rehabilitating biomechanics and prosthetics.

Farmington, New York ------------,------------

Experience

Sanford Health, Sioux Falls, SD – Intern 5.2020 - Cancelled. Unfortunately, this internship was canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Had I gone, my duties were as follows, support the biomechanical analysis efforts including data collection, algorithm developments, and custom written analysis in MATLAB across numerous technologies and projects. Some of which being 3D motion capture, force plates, EMG, instrumented treadmill, and wearables. Applications included gait analysis, quantitative rehabilitation for baseball and golf biomechanics and running.

Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, VA – REU Research Assistant 5.2019-8.2019. I was the primary undergraduate working on two ongoing research projects in the field of bone regeneration. Analyzed data and gained further knowledge in the laboratory using histography, microCT, sonification, cell culture, ELISAs, ImageJ and animal surgeries. Presented my work at the fall 2019 BMES conference as a poster.

Education

Worcester Polytechnic Institute- bachelor’s in biomedical engineering 08.2017 – 05.2021 3.58 GPA, Women’s Varsity Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field (Captain), Alpha Xi Delta Women’s Fraternity, Biomedical Engineering Society.

Projects

ACL Injury Mitigation in Women Basketball Players, WPI, 8.2020-5.2021. Extensively researched the population’s need to reduce ACL tears specifically in women. Collaborated in a team to plan, execute, prototype and analyze our basketball shoe’s design. Future plans include comparable mechanical testing such as gait analysis, motion capture, pressure sensing and muscle activation to investigate the effectiveness of our design against current market products. As well as data analysis through CAD and MATLAB. We are currently in the process of applying for a patent for our design.

Evaluating Solar Photovoltaic Water Pumping Systems in Khon Kaen, Thailand, 10.2019-3.2020. Travelled to Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand and worked on an interdisciplinary team to create and execute a methodology to evaluate the efficiency of solar photovoltaic water pumping systems in rural Thailand. Produced a final report, presented our findings and recommended steps to further the project in neighboring countries.

Combating Lower Back Pain Through the Feet, WPI, 8.2019-10.2019. Designed and built a prototype of a pressure sensing orthotic to quantitatively measure the amount of pressure a person puts on their foot during the stages of the gait cycle to investigate the relationship between lower back pain and proper posture during movement. Analyzed the data using MATLAB software and prototyped in SolidWorks.
