I am currently working as a personal trainer after graduating university. The clients I have are seeing the results they want and all on track to bettering their lives whilst simultaneously learning the fundamental principles of training and evidence-based nutrition so that the progress they make is sustainable. My coaching and training ideas have come from a long history of professional sport; I was a rugby player from the ages of 14 playing for teams in the top leagues (Super League) and representing my country. During my time at these clubs I have picked up and taken note of how the top S&C coaches train and develop athletes to take them to the top of their game, something I am very passionate about.
Over the course of my master’s degree I gained a placement at Huddersfield Town FC. The placement was a great insight into the running and management of nutritional interventions required by a professional sports club. During the placement I was responsible for creating individualised guidance on nutrition and meal plans that focused on performance as well as educating the players, as it was crucial that the athletes understood the reasons behind nutrition strategies. This is something I would feel confident in implementing if there is not already the structure in place. This does include confidence in conducting skinfold body composition measurements. I have also got a nutritional portfolio with help and knowledge around supplements and ways athletes can improve their diets to get the most out of their performance.
Throughout my undergraduate degree in Sports Science, I was taught how to conduct most performance test measures. I can confidently perform tests such as Opto Jumps, GPS, aerobic testing and much more. I am also capable or planning adequate warmups, cool downs, and conditioning sessions with a sports specific approach and relatable to the goals of each session. Coupled with the ability to perform a variety of different components associated with training, I have also experienced these first-hand. Being a professional and semi-professional rugby player, I have picked up many tricks from sports science teams, and strength and conditioners all which I still apply to date and could add variety to current training, this includes, pre-habilitation sessions, planning and undertaking conditioning sessions, and the ability to plan long term gym program all of which specific to the needs of the players and their match day performance requirements/different positions.
Pure Speed academy is a sprint speed training session either in groups or 1:1 where athletes learn how to improve their running sprint speed through various training methods. I was there to lead and help take group session which consisted of ten to fifteen children aged 8-16yrs. The experience I gained here not only taught me how to be a sprint coach, but I also gained the ability to lead, plan and control group sessions whilst making them engaging and enjoyable getting the most out of every client. Whilst at pure speed academy, I also had the opportunity to train the U16s England lacrosse team before their tour of America.
