DESIGN OF A CUMENE PLANT, (Fall 2019 – Spring 2020)
The Production of Cumene by Catalytic Distillation
Objective: To design a cost-effective plant that produces 99.9% pure cumene.
Purpose: To demonstrate elements of market analysis, material and energy balance, process equipment design, hazard and operability, and safety.
Synopsis:
- Determined plant capacity, location, and possible clients from market analysis.
- Chose a specific process and catalyst to produce the desired cumene purity.
- Created block and process flow diagrams.
- Performed mass and energy balances.
- Simulated the cumene catalytic distillation process using Aspen Plus.
- Sized equipment (distillation columns, pumps, etc.) to complete a plant economic analysis.
- Considered equipment and personal safety to be major responsibilities of the “company”
- Worked on a team of 5 to compile the information and present to an industry panel
Result: Design was found to be economically feasible and the goal of producing 99.9% pure cumene was achieved.
Completed: May 6, 2020
