YMCA Resume/Cover Letter

To Whom it May Concern:

I am writing this letter in the interest of the Teen Coordinator position in the American Canyon Clubhouse.
For the past two years, I have had the privilege of working with a wide spectrum of students within the Boys and Girls Club. I have gotten to sit with members from different communities and listen to their stories—stories of joy, of pain, of hope, and of dreams. This posture is where I come alive and where I find the ability to be a part of mending the world.
These passions began while I was in high school, as I discovered my skills in leading and developing students younger than me. Recognizing these gifts, I left for college, focusing on studying and imagining how to empower and develop students of different ages and cultures most effectively to transform a community. I found myself working with preschoolers in South Africa, taking middle schoolers to lunch in Southern California, mentoring high schoolers in the Bay Area—these experiences shaped my orientation towards community development. Students are how communities are transformed. When we form relationships with children and teenagers to understand their unique stories and dreams, we empower them to believe those stories matter and those dreams are possible.
The Teen Coordinator position merges several aspects of my passions into a single position. I have been immersed in administration as I worked in an office setting for four years hinged on attention to organization and communication inside and outside our department.
I have been steeped in understanding teenagers. With three years of formal experience, and another five of informal experience, of working with middle school and high school students, I have developed a posture of empathetic listening with teenagers, utilizing techniques and taking into consideration the developmental needs of each student’s phase of life.
I have been captivated in developing leaders. I have trained and supported college students during a four month position and guided adult volunteers in student programs for three years. This has provided the skills necessary for training, developing, and supporting a staff, understanding that to develop a program requires developing the adults working the program.
I have been trained in program development. My studies in college centered on creatively communicating concepts to further people from different cultures. Pair this with my consistent creation of curriculum and program at both my role as a youth pastor and at the Boys and Girls Club, I have been given the competency to shape unique programs to develop members based on their cultural, psychological, and emotional needs.
It is my hope to express this intersection of different aspects of who I am through the position of Teen Coordinator. I value the work your organization has been doing in this community so far, and look forward to whatever is to come.

Sincerely,
Caleb Parker
