Dear Hiring Committee:

Please accept my resume and cover letter for the position.

My lifelong goal is to challenge systems of oppression through advocating for a socially just society. I am an individual that wants to break down barriers and remove social obstacles. Although I am an individual who has privilege, I will leverage my privilege to make life easier for marginalized and vulnerable populations. I decided to academically pursue social service work because I have a need to see that our future is a bright one and that everyone can change.

The reason I would be a great candidate for this agency is that I am able to demonstrate what a productive and supportive social service worker should do. I exhibit professionalism through my understanding and commitment to setting boundaries. I demonstrate excellent oral and written communications skills, advocacy skills and active listening. I have refined these skills through my academic pursuits where I have worked with diverse populations on a regular basis utilizing my confidence to ask questions and gain clarity. Secondly, I have exercised my advocacy skills while using the strength based approach and cohesively expanding and exploring my support of marginalized and vulnerable populations, such as the LGBTQ+, trauma survivors, domestic violence, and others.  I have demonstrated my knowledge by integrating and using my worldview, empathy and broad experience with vulnerable populations. Lastly, I incorporate my values as a social work student by displaying competency and an open mind when exploring what the client has said and expressed. While working with clients, I utilize paraphrasing and expression, which allow me to promote critical thinking and active listening.

In addition to my skills, personally, I have encountered some tragedies which help me to empathize with clients. Although I am at the beginning of my professional career, I always do my research, ask questions, practice self-care and make sure I make myself approachable. I utilize a growth mindset and believe in anti-oppressive practice. In social service work I know it is a challenging position but I have a passion for helping others and helping them to renew their sense of well-being by giving them options and areas they can go to, to feel safe. Social service work is an honor to do and I am grateful that I had an opportunity to be given this opportunity.

Please see above my email address and phone number where you can get in touch with me. Thank you for your consideration.

Best regards,

Emily Marie Limotta Calcada
