Collected seawater in field, including swimming out past reef flats to fill 30 gallon drums, draging the full drums back to shore, and carrying them to the truck.

CHIHUAHUAN DESERT BIODIVERSITY RESEARCH EXPERIENCE FOR UNDERGRADUATES, UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS EL PASO, EL PASO, TX
Summer REU Student, PI Dr. Philip Lavretsky, May 28, 2018- August 5 2018, 40 hours/week
Conducted observational field studies on Mexican ducks (Anas diazi) in an attempt to gain natural history knowledge of an understudied sub-species, including establishing nesting behaviors and fledgling survivorship, and behavioral ecology more broadly.
Constructed and problem shot next box construction, installed next boxes in the field.
Conducted a genomics study to determine relatedness between different Mexican duck populations, Mexican duck populations nearby mallards, and determine the patterns of migration between Mexican duck populations. This was done by mapping out a haplotype network using SRSS.
Assisted with other projects, such as further genomics work, which included running PCR and lab maintenance duties.
Presented findings at university-wide symposium at the end of the REU.

LAB OF ALEX GUNDERSON, TULANE UNIVERSITY, NEW ORLEANS, LA

• Conduct research on native and invasive anole species relating to behavioral thermoregulation.
o Activity Budgeting: Conduct behavioral field observations to describe both species’ activity at various available body temperatures.
o Thermal Preference & Plasticity: Conduct laboratory experiments with both species to determine thermal preferences and establish their capacity for plasticity in regards to thermal preference.
• Catch specimens in the field, maintain specimens in captivity, assist with constructing equipment needed for lab, general lab maintenance.
• Mentor undergrads in experimental science and various lab tasks.
• Presented preliminary findings in poster form at The Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology conference in January 2020.


Skills
LABORATORY & RESEARCH
Experienced in PCR, pipetting methods, general lab maintenance and chemical inventory, live animal care both in lab and in vivarium.
Familiarity with SRSS and R, including building haplotype networks and data cleaning in SRSS, and data analysis, figure building, and writing functions in R.
PRACTICAL
• Experience driving large vehicles, van, golf carts, and in off road conditions.
• Ability to work outdoors in both extreme humidity and extreme dry heat.
