You are probably wondering why a double major in Criminal Justice and Sociology is applying for an internship for fashion services? Believe me, so am I. In the last year, I have decided to take a leap of faith from a Pre-Law student to committing myself to the pursuit of a career in fashion.
It all started with my mother’s sewing machine. I had dedicated 12 years filled with thread laced nights, countless pieces of scrapped fabric, and my own creative agenda to a 1999 Singer Sewing machine. The need of altering my clothes due to my painfully small body frame was constantly apparent, but it was the love of turning those clothes into something of my own image that sparked joy. Unfortunately I didn’t think fashion was a credible job opportunity for myself. So when college came into my life, I placed my sewing machine in my closet and picked up an LSATs prep book instead.
There were 4 jobs that changed my perspective on becoming a lawyer. Firstly, I had become an Event Coordinator for the IT (Informatics Technology) Council, where I learned to use graphic design and gained an in depth knowledge on the logistics of social media to aid me in growing club numbers and events. IT Council was where I gained interest in company development and visual planning as well as social media growth. I also held positions as Treasurer and Social Media Coordinator for Rutgers Art Business Club that opened my eyes to taking control of your own creative abilities and efficient marketing.
Then I spent 212 days taking on an opportunity as an amateur model part of Rutgers F.A.C.E. Modeling Team as a Fashion Coordinator. F.A.C.E gave me the opportunity to expand my experience with concept photography, designer relations and communications, and creative directing while piloting a professional leadership position with my peers. Although Fashion Coordinator was my first epiphany position that catalyzed my decision to pursue fashion, Lisse` Fitness gave me a professional job that gave me the hope to continue to strive and grow as not only a creative director, but expand my ability to balance the responsibilities of social media coordinator and designing. I realize my background of skills may not be the most conventional for a typical fashion services intern, however, I do believe my skills and assets prove my adaptability and competence for the position.
