CREEC (California Regional Environmental Education Community) is a statewide Environmental Education Communications Network managed out of California Department of Education. The Fiscal agent for Region 10 RIMS is San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools, however, my work in our region mostly served Riverside County Office of Education schools, as I live in the Coachella Valley, and was hired to be the CREEC Eastern Region Coachella Valley Coordinator. Promoted high quality Environmental Education opportunities for students and teachers (Professional Development) primarily in the Coachella Valley (RCOE area) but also provided information through quarterly newsletters and email flyers for our whole area of Region 10 RIMS. Created and organized an annual Environmental Art Contest open to all Pre-K---12 students in Region 10. Each year, one of the 5 elements is rotated as the theme for submissions to inspire critical thinking skills to be expressed creatively through visual art. Although I am no longer a CREEC Coordinator, I continued to coordinate the Art Contest this year (2019) as a volunteer, now being offered as an Environmental Education Collaborative (EEC) program.
Starting in 2007, I was the Chair and Coordinator for an annual Environmental Youth Leadership program for students grades 6-12. Teams of 4-8 students from Region 10 schools would attend a one-day skill-building workshop at The Living Desert in Palm Desert, to garner information and inspiration to spearhead an Environmental Service Learning project of their choice. Then over 6 months, teams would implement these projects, returning in the Spring for a celebration to share and report about their experience, the successes and challenges of Service Learning.
