Resident Assistant
University Village Cal Poly Pomona - Pomona, CA August 2017 to August 2018
Assisted the community by putting on events to encourage involvement and was on call multiple nights per month to assist with emergencies and enforce policies. During my time as a resident assistant, my largest accomplishment was being an advocate for my community and residents living within the community. Many students felt safe to come to me for advice, to resolve conflict, or to talk through emotional pain and/or mental health of themselves or others. I learned effective strategies of helping students within the community who felt homesick, lonely, ill, suicidal, overworked, etc., or who had suffered from trauma and needed an outlet. I was able to direct students to resources that would help them or notify emergency services if necessary.

Mental Health Placement
PMGY Ambalangoda, July 2017 to August 2017
While abroad in Sri Lanka I volunteered at a special needs orphanage, shadowed Psychiatrists and Psychologists working with trauma victims of the 2002 tsunami, visited Buddhist monks at Sri Lankan temples, and shadowed acupuncturists and doctors using herbal medication. During the month long stay in Ambalangoda, Sri Lanka, I was educated about the differences between western and eastern medicine both in the medical field and in the mental health field. I learned about the extent to which mental health stigma in the Eastern world limits people from getting the help they need, and how mentally ill patients are treated as compared to Western counties.

Was a first responder in the event of an emergency and would call emergency services as appropriate.

Lifeguard and Swim Instructor
MOUNTAIN VIEW RECREATION DIVISION - Mountain View, CA February 2013 to August 2016
Worked as a Lifeguard I for two years, and a Head Lifeguard for one year, and taught swim lessons for four years.
During these four years, I learned numerous leadership skills such as how to keep children safe in the water and keep them engaged in activities (make the activities fun and exciting), and how to lead a team of lifeguards as a Head guard.
My largest accomplishment was receiving swim instructor of the year after effectively encouraging a child to overcome his fear of water over two weeks of swim lessons. His mother wrote me a letter of gratitude following my instruction explaining that her child had participated in 7 swim lessons, and that she (his mother) was about to remove him from swim lessons if it hadn't been for my help.
