Education

The University of Leicester September 2015 – July 2019
American Studies (BA)
I am currently in my final year at the University of Leicester studying American politics, history and visual culture. All three subjects amount to my broad and exceptional knowledge on cultural issues within American, supported by but not limited to, my fascination with the deep-rooted historical issues in the US, and an understanding of the inner American political system which continues to have significant impact on world politics.

My third year was spent studying aboard at California State University, Long Beach which was a fantastic experience. This year abroad opened my eyes on a level of cultural understanding and despite being out of my comfort zone I was still academically successful, achieving 70% – 90% in all modules.

Employment

Mount Mascal Stables, yard and office assistant 2013 - 2014
My first job at sixteen was as a general assistant at Mount Mascal Stables, Kent, a high established horse-riding school. My responsibilities varied, and no two days were the same. This job was a weekly role however, ranging from cleaning the yard to very high standards, helping in the office via answering phone calls and booking children’s birthday parties, to working behind the bar serving food and drinks to clients, and opening and closing tabs and the till, the experience was highly beneficial. Commuting to and from work which took over an hour via public transport for minimum wage payment, taught me value of time and money, whilst producing a committed work ethos which I apply to all aspects of life.

Ted Baker, Sales Assistant 2014 - 2015
Although a part time job, I worked at Ted Baker four to five days a week after I was kept on permanently after succeeding in my role as a Christmas temp worker. At the same time as having this job, I was also in sixth form full time studying for my A – Level exams. Whilst working at Ted Baker, providing excellent customer service was the norm and attending to various cliental needs such as ordering product in from other stores all over the country, keeping items on hold and building cliental in order to increase personal sales and create an overall great working relationship between colleagues and clients. Also, replenishing stock daily, cleaning the shop to high standards and steaming products were a key part of my duties at the company. Selling product for both men’s and women’s wear expanded my area of expertise and during my time at Ted Baker I exceeded selling targets and hit the bonus frequently. Being in full time education as well as working professionally in luxury retail, taught me the skill of balance and prioritising.

Extreme Lift Services Ltd, office assistant and on-site engineer mate/ labourer 2016 – Present
When not at University, I work for Extreme Lift Services Limited, a professional lift fitting and repair company based in and around London. My duties at Extreme Lifts vary and range from working in a team with other engineers on site at jobs all around London during inconsistent hours with varying late and early shifts. When on site, jobs can be complex, and my main role is helping other experienced engineers in ensuring the job is complete to the highest of standards. Experiencing different working environments from the Shard to council estates in less economically developed areas, I have learnt excellent customer service skills and gained an understanding of working overtime and an attitude of working until the job is complete. When working in the office I gained an insight of how a business operates with regards to cliental relationships, operating effective colleague communications and officiating paperwork such as quotes and invoices and whilst learning organizational skills from booking in jobs for on-site engineers.

University of Leicester, student ambassador and course representative 2018 - Present
During my last year at University I was asked to play a fundamental role during open days for students looking to study at the University of Leicester and study in America during a year abroad. From giving parents and future students tours of the campus to giving talks in front of large audiences, this job has developed my confidence and charisma. Engaging with future students who do not know anything about American studies can at times be challenging, yet I am able to converse and connect with people from all walks of life and frequently change their understanding of American studies so much, that multiple students have chosen American studies as their future course. This job has taught me the importance of a diversifying target market and aided my academic knowledge and social skills to develop and demonstrate clarity in the workplace.

Other Interests and experiences

Combined Cadet Force KSR, army cadets 2013 - 2015
During my last two years at school, I joined the Army cadets. This was strict weekly programme where I was taught key skills from fitness to severe attention to detail regarding uniform standards, which were measured by intense weekly uniform inspection by senior officers also on a weekly basis. Experiencing and learning tactical manoeuvres and a basic understanding of rifle practice. Working in a team effectively and being disciplined to follow orders and complex instructions were drilled into me from a young age. This aided in conquering extreme challenges and is a good illustration of my varied experiences that I gained from various trips during school breaks such as Capel Curig, Wales, at HQ CCT.

Competitive sport
From a young age sports have always been a key part of my life. Mainly focusing on football growing up I was asked to represent my county at Kent Elite, playing in national matches spread across the country. Growing up my interest in self-defence was experienced part taking in kick boxing and boxing at an amateur non-competitive level. During school I completed the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh award, and this in combination with all sports of which I represented on club level I thrived working as a part of a cohesive unit with a singular objective that extended beyond the pitch and site.

Charity work
Using my strong interpersonal skills, I was able to influence fellow peers at school in partaking in a voluntary charity scheme named HANDS. My duties ranged from helping the elderly maintain their property and other jobs that they found difficult such as cutting grass and cleaning their houses, to helping primary school teachers with younger children in anything from marking work to assisting with reading and numeracy exercises on a weekly basis.

Travel
I enjoy travel and interlinking with different cultures and gaining experiences that cannot be learnt from staying in one place. Meeting new people and learning something from different characters and different countries all over the world highlights my desire to constantly develop and improve my cultural awareness and overall character. The world is a huge place and having the skill to engaging with people on a global scale is a fundamental component to success.
