RESEARCH EXPERIENCE
A New Optimization Algorithm Research
Master thesis (in progress), Advisor : Prof. Jennifer Erway
5/2019 Present
? Base on the regular SR1, proposed a new algorithm (L-SR1) tackling a sample batch to compute and store the gradient descent and the approximation of Hessian Matrix, conducted numerical experiments by MATLAB, concluded that L-SR1 can significantly reduce large-scale computational and memory demands of machine learning models, more efficiently optimized the loss function, and its convergence rate is faster than some famous algorithms such as L-BFGS
Ethylene Signaling and Transcriptional Networks that Control Root Development 5/2019 Present
NSF-supported project, Award Number: 1716279, Advisor : Prof. James Norris, David John, etc.
? Participated in making genes from high-throughput omics data set related to transcript abundance hierarchical and constituting directed acyclic graphs, introduced an iterative-like method to tackle the graphs with high-dimensional genes, developed Python programs with others and revealed the multi-layer gene expression networks that determine pathways of gene activations and gene repressions, made scientific visualizations
? Collected data on oxygenated-hemoglobin concentration changes at sixteen optodes in testees brain after they finished watching a short video, developed methods similar to above, quantified empathy and gratitude to explore complex brain perception
Select Suitable Areas for Coffee Cultivation in Guatemala 10/2018 Climate Data Hackathon, organized by the Climate Innovation Center in Asheville
? Identified the multi-level relationship chain among coffee production and climate-related factors; Acquired, stored and cleaned relevant data over the past decade, developed a time-varying climate model and simulated with R, drew inferences and made risk predictions to foster efficient decision making for Guatemala coffee production which is the only source in their economy, highly-praised as the most technical work by CEO of the climate center
Central Limit Theorem of High Dimensional Poisson Regression
Honors Project of Honours College at UM, Advisor : Prof. Lihu Xu
9/2017 5/2018
2/2 BO WU
? Proved the second order tailed term limit of the difference between real value and estimator of coefficients is zero, revised subtraction process of the regression, transformed the difference in the Square-root Lasso equation, deduced the difference follows the central limit theorem under the KKT condition to help select important variables in the models with high dimensional data
The Elements of Asymptotic Geometry 1/2017 5/2017
Math 597 Reading Course at UIUC, Advisor : Prof. Igor Mineyev
? Detected a mistake of Tetrahedron Lemma 2.1.4 proof in the book The Elements of Asymptotic Geometry (one of European Mathematical Society Monographs), honed critical analysis ability and independent study ability, graded with Satisfactory evaluation
TEACHING EXPERIENCE
Teaching Assistant, the Department of Mathematics & Statistics at WFU
9/2019 Present
? Conducted help and review sessions for cross-listed undergraduate and graduate course STA662 (Multivariate Statistics), graded theoretical and R programming assignments, developed exam problems, administered exams, well-received by Professor Berenhaut (instructor) and students
Tutor, the Math Center at Wake Forest University
9/2018 Present
? Provided extensive math tutoring for undergraduates, pertinently breaking down complex issues into easy to understand ideas, demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills
