PROBLEMS IN BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING – EMG Bicep Band

• Collaborated with a 7 person team in class to develop a device for early detection of epilepsy in
children aged 12-24 months for which tonic-clonic febrile seizures are an indicator of increased
risk
• Developed a bicep band to measure axillary temperature greater than 37. 4 degrees Celsius and
muscle activity through a sEMG with frequency greater than 150 Hz and amplitude greater than 35
microvolts
• Conducted tests to verify validity and reliability of the sEMG signals and the devices output in
a simulated seizures environment followed by statistical analysis testing
• Collaborated to develop a MATLAB algorithm to import the EMG data, set parameters, extract
amplitude, and conduct zero crossing analysis to output seizure detection decision
