Accountant

Dear Sir or Madam:

My accounting experience began with an Accounts Receivable and Accounts Payable clerk position at the Honolulu Waldorf School. Ive held several positions since then, including two years as an independent bookkeeper. Throughout my career, I had the benefit of working with and learning from several experienced CPAs. Although I enjoyed the work I was doing, I wanted to branch out and become an accountant. I decided that obtaining a college degree was the first step of the process.

My college career began in the fall of 2012 at the University of Hawaii Maui College. I graduated with my Associate of Applied Science in Accounting degree in May 2017. After receiving my associate degree, I decided to take it a step further. In May 2019, I graduated with a Bachelor of Applied Science in Applied Business and Information Technology degree.

Prior to graduating I was inspired to create the Carla Mae Bailey Scholarship for New Beginnings through the University of Hawaii Foundation. This scholarship provides financial assistance to students having to start-over because of life-changing events. For instance, death of a parent or spouse, divorce, etc.

Ive worked in many different environments. This was especially true while I was an independent bookkeeper. I successfully navigated the different company cultures while still maintaining the discretion and confidentiality that the position requires. I am adept at learning and implementing company procedures, highly organized, and detail oriented.

On a personal note, I grew up in Kona and attended Kealakehe Elementary school. I graduated high school at Kamehameha Schools-Kapalama. Ive lived in Utah, California and Washington state. In Hawaii, Ive lived on Big Island, Maui, Lanai, and Oahu. However, Kona is my home and I intend to settle here permanently.

I have been a volunteer mentor with Kids Hope USA for about ten years. Kids Hope partners adult mentors with at-risk elementary aged children. We would help children with homework, math and language skills, and other tasks the teacher requested help with. Most importantly, we were a listening ear for the child.

I hope that this cover letter and resume will give you a good idea of my experience and character. Thank you for your consideration.

WORK EXPERIENCE
Noni Maui LLC
Bookkeeper
2009-2012

My position at Noni Maui LLC required the ability to maintain the financial records for three entities: Noni Maui LLC, Noni Maui, and Pacific Biotech. I dealt directly with corporate vendors as well as the farmers that provided the fruit for our products.

In addition to my regular duties, I helped create a cost of goods list for each of the companys products. I contacted the IRS and implemented a plan to pay the companys back taxes. I worked with vendors to pay-off the companys past-due invoices.

The procedures I implemented helped to increase vendors confidence that the company would act in good faith to pay its invoices, the IRS debt was repaid, and the CEO had the information she needed to make choices about which products to sell.

CMB Books
Owner
2007-2009

I offered bookkeeping services to small business owners. My clients owned businesses in the manufacturing, service, and delivery industries. I reviewed accounting practices that were in place and made suggestions as needed. I also trained staff in Quickbooks.

I closed the business when I accepted a full-time position at Noni Maui LLC.

Honolulu Waldorf School
AR & AP Clerk/Facilities Manager
2005-2007

My accounts receivables duties at Honolulu Waldorf included posting the payments that were received, monitoring aging reports, and contacting customers with past-due invoices. Those monthly calls reduced the number of late tuition payments. I was the accounts payable clerk for only a few months. The workload was heavy enough that the Director saw fit to hire someone specifically for accounts payable. As part of our accounting duties, the AP clerk and I were responsible for the financial portion of the annual Waldorf fair. This included creating internal controls for monitoring cash and scrips, training staff and volunteers in those controls, reconciling the cash received to scrips sold, and making the cash deposits.

As the facilities manager, I oversaw regular maintenance projects as well as major summer repair projects. Some of the major summer projects were tree trimming, classroom floor replacement, interior and exterior painting as needed, etc. I also managed a major renovation of the schools rental home when it was vacated by the last tenant.

Ivy Hall Academy, Provo, Utah
Office Manager
2003-2005

I started at Ivy Hall as a substitute teacher, and substitute office manager. After approximately four years, I was hired as a teachers aide in the Pre-K classroom. In 2003, I was offered the Office Manager position.

This position required superior organization skills. I was responsible for ensuring that parents had the required forms and that the forms were returned before the school year began. I maintained all the student files, which included required forms, teacher evaluations, and vaccination records.

In the financial area, I recorded tuition payments, called on parents that were behind in tuition. I maintained the prepaid lunch accounts and called on parents when their account was nearing depletion. I recorded all financial transactions into Quickbooks and worked with the CPA to close our books at the end of each year.

My performance in the first year impressed the Board of Directors, and they increased my pay by 15%.
