Title: Earth Trek Summer Camp Counselor Mentor
Location: Public Parks in Carmel Valley, Carmel, and Monterey

Summary
Earth Trek Forest School Counselor Mentors work with the Forest School Head Educator to lead groups of day campers aged 3-9 in hiking and exploring the public parks in the Monterey Bay area. Each session Counselor Mentors and Forest School Leads work with groups to implement lessons, games, stories and other activities centered around that session's theme. This role is ideal for people interested in gaining experience in early childhood education, Forest Schooling, outdoor education, and summer camps. The role is a seasonal position beginning June 6, 2022. This position is expected to run 11 weeks ending on August 18, 2022.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Follow all Risk Management policies to mitigate camper and staff injury and illness
Support and assist the implementation of lessons, and group management
Maintain camper safety and comfort over uneven terrain in all kinds of weather
Facilitate meaningful and fun outdoor experiences to help campers form a personal relationship with the natural world
Proactively engage campers and manage safety in games and activities
Lead daily nature art activities- materials and training provided

Experience, Competencies and Education

Ability to implement and model excellent risk management practices and maintain a physically, socially and emotionally safe environment for our participants
Experience working with children ages 3-9, particularly in camps or formal or informal education settings.
Demonstrated commitment to equity and inclusion in education, and creating positive community work culture.
Willingness to be coached and openness to feedback.
Capable of working as part of a collaborative team.
Possess current CPR (Adult, Child and Infant) and First Aid certification or ability to get certified before the camp season begins.


Candidates must possess most of the following attributes
Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions
Comfortable sitting on the ground and getting dirty
Comfortable handling small creatures such as snails, slugs, and frogs
Interested in further growth in nature studies and mentoring
A nurturing, loving, and creative attitude
Dedicated to developmentally appropriate practice and aware of developmental needs of young children
Have reliable transportation

Favored Experience:
Wilderness First Aid or Wilderness First Responder Certification
Training and experience in early childhood development and education
Experience with outdoor/nature based mentoring, Forest Schooling, or Environmental Education
Naturalist skills and knowledge
Familiarity and/or experience with Waldorf education, Reggio Emilia approach, or Maria Montessori principles
Experience with traditional/ancient skills.
Experience in Storytelling
Play a musical instrument and/or sings

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.


COMPENSATION
$15 -20 per hour depending on experience
Hours are:
Training week of June 6th-9th 9:00-3:00
Session 1 8:00 am -1:00pm
Session 2 8:30 am-3:30 pm
Session 3 8:00 am -1:00 pm
Session 4 8:30 am -3:30 pm
Session 5 8:00 am-1:00 pm
