About the Opportunity
Responsible for ensuring the safety of swimmers and water exercisers at the Turner Community Pool inside the Turner Community Center. This is an entry-level position with no prior lifeguard experience required. Minor-friendly position; candidates must be at least 15-years of age or older. Full-time and part-time positions are available. Must possess current lifeguard certification and be able to pass a lifeguard swimming skills test.

**A lifeguard certification course will be offered at Chautauqua Health & Fitness during the month of May. Space is limited and advanced registration is required. About Your Work Day

Chautauqua Health & Fitness is a year-round facility located at Chautauqua Institution. We offer a variety of memberships and passes for use of the facility as well as group exercise classes, personal training and swim lessons. Our facility includes cardiovascular and strength machines and a large selection of free weight equipment as well as an indoor pool. We are a single lifeguard facility during the off-season (Fall, Winter, Spring) and a two-guard facility during the summertime. The Fitness Center is always staffed when the pool is open and fitness staff are additional responders in event of a pool emergency. Shifts in the off-season are typically 2.5 hours long. During the summer, a shift can be 3.5 to 8 hours in length.

We have and regularly practice an Emergency Action Plan for our facility, basic rescue, and CPR/AED skills. Uniform and equipment will be provided. Lifeguard responsibilities include:

Ensuring safety of swimmers.
Supervising conduct of participants.
Keeping accurate records/documentation of work hours, attendance, safety & maintenance checks, discipline/incident reports.
Properly opening and securing pool area and locker rooms.
Regularly inspecting lifesaving and first aid equipment before opening facility.
Checking for proper equipment storage prior to and after each shift.
Clearly and professionally conveying rules to patrons and enforcing all regulations courteously but firmly.
Arriving to work early, reliably, well-equipped, and physically ready to perform expected duties (well-rested, not intoxicated, or hung-over, proper attire, arrangements for meals and hydration).
Administering first aid, deep-end tests, performing appropriate rescues and follow-up procedures.
Presenting and maintaining professional appearance and demeanor appropriate of the level of training completed and the institution of which a representative.
Maintaining adequate level of physical fitness.
Attending mandatory orientation and training sessions prior to working and during employment.
Minimum age of 16 years of age (proper working papers required if under the age of 18)
Must possess current Lifeguard, CPR/AED and First Aid certifications accepted by NYS Health Department and must be valid for at least one year beyond date of hire.

About Your Schedule

Chautauqua Institution and Chautauqua Hotel Company offer flexible schedules, full and part-time, for seasonal employment during summer operations starting annually each June and concluding in August. Seasonal employment may be available earlier (pre-season) and beyond season (post-season) based on business needs and candidate availability. Schedules typically include evenings, weekends, and/or holidays as a requirement.

While you will confirm your final schedule with management at the time of an interview and offer of employment, you should generally anticipate the following schedule options for this position:

Typically there are two lifeguard shifts per day, morning and afternoon. You will receive your schedule one month at a time.

About Your Compensation

Compensation for this position starts at $14.00/Hour and, with demonstrated experience and qualifications, candidates may earn up to $17.00/Hour.

About Living on the Grounds

Chautauqua Institution may provide limited housing options on our grounds or assist you with locating nearby housing arrangements for select opportunities based on business needs.
