MIDDLE SCHOOL TEACHER
Emerson School, Palo Alto
The ideal candidate is a "star" who understands and loves children: warm, caring, curious, sparkling, interested, enthusiastic, committed, creative, positive, and capable.
Candidates must have a bachelors degree and teaching experience. Teachers with Montessori certificates are especially desirable, as are those with exceptional abilities, talents, and backgrounds (including math, science, Chinese, Spanish). Candidates should live within 30 miles of Palo Alto; out-of-town candidates will not be considered. Candidates must be U.S. citizens or be permitted to work in the U.S. now. (Candidates without the requisite experience may still submit rsums, which will be reviewed for other possible openings, including sites in Pleasanton and north San Jose.)
Teachers work an eight-hour day, year round, with up to five weeks of paid time off (plus more, subject to approval) at times of their choosing. Salaries for the positions are competitive, based on qualifications and experience. (When applying, please indicate salary requirements.) Early Learning Institute provides the full range of benefits, plus sabbaticals and training funds. Head teachers have two hours per day of paid non-teaching time for preparation.
The programs are individualized, recognizing each child's unique pattern of growth, talents, and needs. In addition to traditional academic skills, such as reading and math, the program emphasize "metacognitive" skills, such as learning how to learn, how to solve problems, and how to make decisions. Classrooms are materials-rich, prepared, structured environments. Information technologies such as computers, multi-media and networking play a major role as tools for learning.
Emerson School features an innovative approach to learning that is developmental and non-graded, providing a continuous and unique learning path for each student. Teachers guide and nurture the development of the whole child: his or her academic, cognitive, emotional, physical, social, and ethical growth and well-being. Children experience an enriched Montessori program under the guidance of experienced, caring teachers in the tradition of the HeadsUp! Child Development Centers, which are also operated by Early Learning Institute, a Palo Alto-based educational organization.
