Welcome university students!
Working with the MPO planning team, this non-exempt, para-professional position provides technical and administrative support involving a wide variety of activities. Responsible for a variety of professional, administrative, and operational duties relating to transportation planning and contract management. Assist the planning team, including the preparation, reporting, and analysis of assigned projects under the supervision of the Strategic Planning Manager.
*NOTE: This is a temporary position that may not exceed twelve (12) months. Incumbent must be bona-fide student in an accredited educational or vocational program. Also, will not work more than an average of 27 hours per week for positions lasting more than 3 months.
Work is performed in a standard office environment and involves light physical demands and frequent use of personal computers. Lifting equipment up to 25 lbs. alone and up to 50 lbs. with assistance.

Provides support to a team of regional transportation planners.
Assists planning staff at community meetings.
Assist with data collection activities and run data analysis using GIS, StreetLight Insight, Signal4 Analytics, and Community Remarks.
Apply planning methods and principles to transportation planning activities, perform transportation research, and prepare, produce, and present reports to groups of 4 – 20 people, possibly more.
Conducts basic office functions as needed, such as data entry, file management, and customer service.
Perform other duties as needed.
Enrolled in a Bachelor’s or Master’s program in an analytical field such as Urban/Regional Planning, Geography, Public Administration, or a related field. Upper level students with 1+ year Geographic Information System experience preferred.

Ability to multi-task and stay organized. Highly responsive to requests from planning staff.

Energy and tenacity to stick to the project and always find a path forward to complete it.
Temperament to learn and willing to change behavior whenever something could be done better.
Ability to read and follow protocols of project management.
Effective communication skills--both writing and speaking.
Ability to engage and gain value from those who can help during the project and in using its findings.
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and ADOBE Creative Suite. GIS and graphic applications experience desired.
Field work requires reliable transportation, a valid Florida driver’s license, and a good driving record.
About the MPO:
The Sarasota/Manatee MPO is the regional transportation planning entity for Sarasota and Manatee Counties. MPO’s are established by state and federal laws and through interlocal agreement to provide a process for local governments within the region to coordinate with the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and the Federal Transit Administration (FTA). The MPO planning process is continuing, comprehensive and cooperative. The Sarasota/Manatee MPO is governed by a 17-member apportioned Board comprised of elected officials representing both counties, nine (9) cities, and a representative of the Sarasota Manatee Airport Authority.
