The American Society of Travel Advisors (ASTA), a § 501(c)(6) trade association based in Alexandria, Virginia, seeks a Legal Intern to work under the direction of the association’s General Counsel in connection with several ongoing projects.
Founded in 1931, ASTA’s mission is to facilitate the business of promoting travel through effective representation, shared knowledge, and enhancement of professionalism. ASTA’s membership consists of approximately 2,600 domestic travel agency and allied travel companies of all sizes employing nearly 30,000 people nationwide. Travel suppliers, including hotel chains, car rental companies, tour operators and cruise lines, are also ASTA members.
It is anticipated that the Legal Intern will assist the General Counsel with a variety of activities, including but not limited to creation of white papers and educational materials for ASTA members, drafting of HR-related documents for the association’s internal use, preparation of presentation materials for webinars and conference calls, contract review, investigation of consumer complaints under the ASTA Code of Ethics, and legal research and writing for amicus briefs.
Desired qualifications: Law students (any year) and undergraduates with a pre-law course of study within one year of graduation are eligible to apply. The ideal candidate will possess strong writing skills and superior attention to detail. An interest in one or more of the following areas is beneficial: employment law, bankruptcy, contracts, corporate governance, regulatory compliance, not-for-profit organizations.
The selected candidate will be available to work on a part-time basis for 8-10 weeks beginning in mid-October. Work will be performed at ASTA’s Alexandria offices. Scheduling of work hours is flexible, but we anticipate the need for between 12 and 16 hours per week. Compensation is $20.00 per hour.
