Early Learning Teacher
For over 30 years, the Children’s Museum of Tacoma has nurtured young children and their grown-ups through play-based exhibits, onsite programming, and community outreach. The Children’s Museum of Tacoma Program team is seeking an Early Learning Teacher to join our Program Coordinator team. This is a hybrid, hands-on position working with our children and visitors, supporting and working in the shoes of our teachers and facilitators, as well as providing administrative support for all Programs. 40% of the Early Learning Teacher's time will be spent in the Muse childcare center supporting the toddler classrooms, 30% of their time will be spent as a co-teacher in the Hoyt preschool classroom, and the remaining 30% will be spent facilitating Play to Learn, an early learning outreach program and providing administrative support. This role will co-report to the Learning Experiences Director and the Director of the Muse.

The Muse is a licensed childcare and early learning center serving children ages 12 months to 5 years. The Muse is inspired by beliefs from early learning centers in Reggio Emilia, Italy. We value teaching and learning through the arts, that is play based, and joyful.
Teachers are adept at listening to children, families, and colleagues with consideration and empathy. They enthusiastically study and practice Reggio Emilia principles. Preschool Powered by Play welcomes children ages 3-5 years old into a community of learners teeming with rich intellectual and social/emotional benefits. Our program is inspired by the beliefs from the early learning centers in Reggio Emilia, Italy. Children have a right to grow at their own pace in a warm, nurturing and supportive environment. As such, we honor that children deserve beautiful classroom spaces wherein they can explore and create constructive relationships with peers and adults.
Play to Learn is a grant funded program that provides a free, high quality, play based school-readiness program for children and their adult caregivers. The program supports children and families by offering age appropriate activities for children and information, resources and support to help adults foster their child’s development and learning through play. This 90-minute adult/child drop-in program occurs weekly September through May in neighborhood settings such as libraries and community centers across Pierce County.
Familiar with children’s developmental stages 12 months- 5 years of age
Collaborate with team to organize indoor and outdoor spaces to maintain a beautiful and clean environment
Assist with emergent curriculum and project-based approaches to early learning
Assist in writing and implementing daily schedule and lesson plans, inclusive of all children
Facilitate art, science, and circle time activities for children and adults that support child development and growth in all domains
Guide intentional caregiver learning for each session of Play to Learn by modelling playful experiences and interactions that honor each child or group of children
Assist with documentation of children’s learning experiences by way of text, photographs, and video
Promote children’s language and literacy development
Support children’s independence and self-help skills
Support children’s ability to take physical, social, and emotional risks.
Support family engagement
Participate in reflective supervision meetings with Director, as needed
Participate in reflective meetings with Muse and Children’s Museum team members, as needed
Assist with implementation of observation and assessment tools
Support producing documentation portfolios and display panels based on the design aesthetic of the Children’s Museum of Tacoma
Comply with DEL licensing regulations, including: child/teacher ratios; child supervision, health, safety, and emergency procedures; diapering and toilet independent practices; and nap time, meal and snack practices
Follow best teaching practices as stated by DEL, NAEYC, NAREA, and Early Achievers
Comply with required MERIT training to maintain good standing
Help maintain accurate record-keeping systems
Help complete record-keeping and other tasks in a timely manner
Distribute marketing materials throughout the community and gather resource materials as needed
Assist with the transportation, set-up, and break down of supplies at Play to Learn
Ability to assume other duties when needed
High school diploma, GED, or equivalency
AA in Early Childhood Education (ECE) or Child Development Associates (CDA); must obtain initial ECE certificate within five years of hire date
Experience caring for children 12 months – 3 years in a childcare setting, birth to 6 years in a play-based setting, and prior experience working with adults in a customer service setting.
Effective verbal and written English skills
Strong ability to work independently and collaboratively
Ability to work with persons of diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds
Excellent interpersonal communication skills
Superior customer service with families and community members
Required to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather
Ability to take walking field trips
Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
Ability to physically interact with children at their level
Strong computer literacy, to include use of Microsoft Office and Google Drive apps
An AA in Special Education, Curriculum & Instruction, Human Development, Teaching through the Arts, or other related ECE field, or a ECE stackable state certificate
Completion of 30 hour STARS training
Enthusiasm for and prior experience facilitating play-based learning for children with special needs and their adult caregivers.
Additional training and experience in working with children who experience Autism, medically fragile and other disabilities is highly preferred.
Bilingual; Spanish, Korean, American Sign Language
Knowledge of Pierce County community resources for families and children
