Responsibilities include cultivating relationships and advancing policy initiatives with education administrators, legislators, labor, civic and community leaders, elders and civil rights leaders, families, and students. Summary of position:
The Martin Luther King Jr. Freedom Center, Oakland — Education and Community Organizing Staff works with the Education and Community Organizing Team in in a rigorous campaign style leadership nonviolence effort. This position utilizes a coaching approach to relationships, personal transformation and social justice. Education and Community Organizing Staff organizes diverse school personnel, elected officials, educators and administrators, labor, community organizations, adults and youth.
Requirements: Staff must live in the East Bay Area. Have a current driver’s license, a car, automobile insurance on that vehicle are requirements. Be able to work irregular hours including evenings and weekends. Be able to travel, including frequent travel within the state and some to other states, including overnight travel. Travel expenses covered. Basic computer literacy. Strong self-initiative. Experience working with people from cultures and backgrounds other than one’s own. Intercultural and intergenerational proficiency. Capacity and desire for self-transformation and the development of self-control.
This is an at-will, exempt, salaried position (no paid overtime) with full benefits (medical, dental and simple IRA, after three months), requiring professional educational certification in specific methodology, protocols and pedagogy. Certification is provided by Freedom Center as part of training process.
Experience in staff or management positions with the following types of employers is highly valued: labor unions, elected officials, political campaigns, progressive issue advocacy organizations, social justice organizations, community and social service organizations.
Education and Community Organizing Staff cultivates relationships and advancing policy initiatives with education administrators and teachers, elected officials, labor, civic and community leaders, elders and civil rights leaders, families, and students in tune with values and principles of nonviolence and civil rights. Ethical leadership coaching provides a framework for self-change. Staff develops the capacity to both give and receive coaching. Responsibilities focus on management of community organizing outreach, legislative and policy work, civic engagement projects, administrator and educator relations, phone calling, organizing events, home visits and school visits. Staff also participates in community and public events together with students and parent volunteers.
