Job Title: Lead Lifeguard

Incumbent:

Classification: Nonexempt (Seasonal)

Reports to: Center Director

Position Purpose:

To further the mission of The Peaks Retreat & Adventure Center by providing supervision and ensuring a safe environment at The Peaks pool. Assist in managing physical operation of the pool facilities and equipment. The Lead Lifeguard will report directly to the Center Director.

Essential Job Functions:

Supervise all pool activities including camps and special events.

Provide supervision during pool activities to help prevent and manage injuries.

Provide rescues as needed.

Perform first aid and CPR and other emergency management services as needed.

Understand and implement appropriate response to changes in water conditions or weather conditions affecting the pool.

Evaluate aquatics abilities of guests, including campers to ensure everyone is staying safe.

Assist in pool activity facilitation during camps and special events

Ensure campers, staff, and guests follow safety procedures while participating pool activities.

Act as reference for facilitation in pool activities.

Manage all pool staff

Ensure all pool staff are trained and certified

Schedule staff as needed, paying attention to the camp and special event schedule

Provide leadership to all pool staff including leading by example, addressing any issues that may arise, and reporting to the Center Director on a regular basis

Attend The Peaks staff meetings to provide updates, questions, and concerns to The Peaks leadership Team

Assist in the management and care of the physical facilities and equipment in the pool program area

Conduct daily check of area and equipment for safety, cleanliness, and good repair.

Clean pool area and pool house daily keeping it clean, sanitized, and free of hazards and debris.

Other Job Duties:

Participate enthusiastically in all activities at The Peaks, planning and leading activities as assigned.

Participate as a member of The Peaks staff to deliver and supervise programming, camps, and special events.

Assist in the planning of any special events in or near the pool.

Relationships:

Center Director

The Head Lifeguard will report directly to Center Director.

Center Director will set expectations and priorities for each event.

Center Director will have regular check-ins, both scheduled and unscheduled, to ensure all staff are informed of upcoming programs, changes, or other information; as needed.

Questions about events can be directed to Center Director.

Program Director

During camps, Head Lifeguard may work closely with Program Director.

Questions about camps or pool-related programing can be directed to Program Director.

Facility Manager

Questions about facilities, organization, and equipment location can be directed to Facility Manager.

The Peaks Facilitator

May work together to facilitate any pool-related programs or activities during camps or events.

Qualifications: (Minimum qualifications and experience)

Current certification in lifeguard training or equivalent.

Current certification in first aid and CPR.

Prior experience at a pool is highly recommended, but not required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Training and experience in lifeguarding.

Strong desire and ability to work with children and families outdoors in the water.

Physical Aspects of the Position:

Ability to communicate and work with guests (of various ages and skill levels) and provide necessary instruction to campers, staff, and guests.

Ability to observe guest behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques.

Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity.

Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.



Some physical requirements of a lifeguard position include prolonged standing, some bending, stooping, and stretching. Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate pool equipment and pool activities. Requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate camper activities/programs and the ability to lift up to 50 lbs. Willingness to live in a camp setting and work irregular hours delivering programming in camp facilities. Operate with daily exposure to the sun, heat and varying water conditions.
