OVERVIEW

Nature in the City (NTC) has been a beacon of urban conservation in San Francisco since 2005. Projects helmed by NTC preserve grasslands, advocate for responsible habitat restoration, and provide environmental equity across the City. Nature in the City connects everyone in San Francisco to nature by cultivating and conserving local habitats. By organizing habitat restoration projects and educational opportunities throughout diverse neighborhoods, we seek to empower local communities with tools to participate in stewardship, citizen science, and lifelong learning. NTC is calling on you to help us continue to preserve our City’s nature and provide access to nature for everyone.

POSITION

We are looking to hire an Urban Wildlife Gardening & Education Intern to help with the creation and maintenance of climate stabilizing, habitat supporting gardens around San Francisco. Our ideal candidate is someone who will embody Nature in the City’s mission while infusing their enthusiasm for stewardship with the responsibilities of creating and maintaining mostly private gardens around the City. This position will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9a.m. to 4p.m. each week.

BENEFITS, DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES & TERMS

- Receive on the job training and build experience, suggested readings, and supervision from skilled Nature in the City team members
- Assist in the care for San Francisco gardens with an emphasis on habitat creation, San Francisco and California native plants, organic and water-wise gardening practices, and excellent client communication
- Work includes weeding, light pruning, planting and transplanting, digging and soil removal, hauling, maintaining drip irrigation systems, sweeping, and cleanup
- Assist in the diagnosis and treatment of unhealthy plants
- Report to Nature in the City staff with detailed weekly time recording
- $50 per day stipend, up to 14 hours per week, and a maximum stipend of $400 per month
- Six months to one-year term commitment
- Academic internship credit may be possible for students enrolled in higher education
- Recommendations for future employment opportunities

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

- Lives/can stay in San Francisco and bike or drive personal automobile to client gardens (we discourage commuting and riding public transit during the COVID-19 pandemic)
- 18 years of age or above
- Knowledge/desire to learn about wildlife habitat gardening best practices, San Francisco/California native and common Mediterranean plants for gardens, pruning, garden soil types and more
- Excellent communication skills
- Reliable and on-time
- Capacity to work efficiently, with attention to detail
- Creativity and problem-solving skills
- Ability to perform physically strenuous tasks
- Enthusiasm for working outside in a variety of weather conditions
- Availability from 9-4pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays for six months to one-year term
