Incredible Opportunity to learn directly from physician and medical staff in an ophthalmology office in Arlington VA

Externship program - volunteering full and part time position; 3 month minimum commitment

Must be available a minimum of 8 hours per week (1 full day); availability of 16 or more hours (2-3 full days ) per week is highly preferred.

Requirements: Bachelors degree. Pursuit in medical career as a medical doctor, optometrist, nurse, physician assistant, certified ophthalmic technician, or other health related field Bilingual in Spanish a plus

Training will be provided as part of the program during your time in the office. Near completion of the externship, you will be provided a glowing recommendation letter (assuming you work hard) and some guidance for the interview process including mock interviews if needed.

Competition for getting into medical schools is high. Schools choose the best applicants and are looking for clinical experience. Clinical experience in the medical field and outstanding letters of recommendation will greatly improve your chances of admission. We have had several of our externs get into medical, osteopathic , optometry and other pre health schoolsover the past few years!

As an outcome of the externship you will be able to: engage directly with physicians, medical staff, and patients.

You will get an introduction to:

Taking good patient histories - We will really focus on this as I feel it is essential to any medical specialty

Medical office administration/front desk experience

CPT and ICD 10 codes (medical billing)

Communicate with patients

Learn to check patients visions.

Learn ophthalmic diagnostic testing including Photo/Visual field/ and OCT machines

Observing or assisting in surgical procedures

The opportunity to write case reports and participate in clinical trials may also exist.
Part of what you get out of this will be what you put in. Most externs have loved being with us and have found this experience to be amazingly useful both personally as well as for helping them ace the med school interview. This position is mostly clinical however externs will also be responsible for being team players in the office including organizing charts and getting charts ready for the next day.
If an opportunity for a paid employed position should arise, we offer it to externs if interested prior to others.
