The Bald Head Island Conservancy on Bald Head Island, NC, is seeking recent college graduates with business, marketing, retail, e-commerce, and social media experience to join our nonprofit team dedicated to the conservation, education, and preservation of barrier islands. Internship duties are primarily working with the non-profit retail gift shop of the Conservancy, where our mission (We Discover, Learn, Conserve & Preserve) meets our merchandise. The selected intern will have the opportunity to work in a challenging, fast-paced environment while learning a wide range of skills focused on retail, marketing, and social media in addition to other responsibilities essential to the function of a nonprofit organization. Interns will live and work on an island only accessible by ferry.

Position Responsibilities

Assist with retail duties in the gift shop, including inventory processing, daily opening and closing duties, and communicating Conservancy program and special events information to our customers, assist with wildlife emergency calls, register guests for programs if needed
Create engaging social media content emphasizing our mission and brand with a focus on broadening our online presence and sales. Assist with our e-commerce website ------------.
Assist with mail runs, special events, fundraisers, and 5K trots, in addition to nonprofit-related duties such as information center, development, and marketing.
Potential to assist with the Sea Turtle Protection Program as needed (less than 10% of the time)
Promote and practice stewardship of the Conservancy�s facilities, properties, and equipment ?
Conduct an individual project connecting our gift shop or merchandise with our mission

Qualifications

Junior, senior, or recent graduate from an accredited college/university majoring in marketing, communications, business management, or a related course of study
Skilled in customer service and creative problem solving
Experience working with the public & ability to engage diverse audiences
Growth mindset & curiosity, detail-oriented, and possess strong communication skills. Ability to be self-directed, take the initiative, and work within a fast-paced team environment. Computer proficiency with strong social media skills (Instagram, TikTok, Facebook). Requires the ability to work in a physically challenging environment, including extreme temperatures, while keeping an upbeat personality.
Must possess a valid Driver�s License, be able to lift 40 lbs, and pass a background check

Details

The internship will run from Tuesday, May 16, through Friday, August 15, 2022. The gift shop will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Average work week is 50 hrs, with one day off per week. Weekend work is required. Interns live in provided on-campus housing. More details here. COVID-19 vaccination is required. COVID-19 guidelines will be followed in line with Bald Head Island, Brunswick County, and North Carolina standards. No exemptions or exceptions.

Compensation

Interns will receive a stipend of $600 per month (pre-tax). Also provided are shared living quarters in the BHI Conservancy dorm, utilities: including wireless internet, parking for a vehicle at the Deep Point Marina, and a weekly ferry ticket for trips between the island and the mainland.
