This position is part of the Alaska Fellows Program. All fellows live together, “in community,” in their respective host site. Each host site is unique and remarkable.

Fellows receive housing, a $1150 monthly living stipend and a $500 relocation stipend. The fellowship includes facilitated and funded opening and closing retreats.

Title: Career Development Fellow

Organization Description: The University of Alaska is the state’s higher education system and has three accredited universities, each filling a unique role in the state. The University of Alaska Fairbanks is the state’s research university; the University of Alaska Anchorage is the urban comprehensive university and the University of Alaska Southeast is the regional university. In addition, each university has affiliated community campuses providing career and technical education to help meet the state’s workforce needs. This fellowship position will work with the career services staff across the system to expand and enhance connections between employers and UA students/alumni and to support a wide range of career development advising and programming.

Position Description:

The University of Alaska Career Development Fellow will work with career services staff across the university system to foster student and employer engagement with our various professional development programs and with Handshake. Specific duties will vary depending on the strengths, goals, and background of the selected applicant but may include:

Designing and updating student, alumni, faculty, and employer-facing resources, such as career guides, web and social media content, and career presentations
Crafting marketing materials to encourage students and employers to engage with UA career services and Handshake
Developing educational materials for employers interested in offering workforce development opportunities such as job shadowing, internships, research, or volunteer positions
Creating training resources for employers interested in advertising positions for UA students, including short videos, instruction guides and FAQs
Researching best practices for utilizing Handshake
Assisting in the planning and execution of UA career fairs and other system-wide career development events
Surveying students and existing UA Handshake business users to identify ways to improve their user experience
Supporting community campus and staff in increasing student access to and engagement with Career Services tools and resources
Examining industry demographics for existing UA Handshake business users to identify gaps in represented industries or communities
Conducting community outreach projects to gain new employer partners
Collaborating with alumni offices at UAF, UAA and UAS to increase alumni engagement

Position Logistics: This statewide position will be housed in Fairbanks at the UAF campus and will work collaboratively with all career services teams across the UA system to support employer relations and workforce development priorities. Hours for this position will primarily be Monday-Friday, 8 am to 5 pm.

Qualifications: Applicants must possess strong written and verbal communication skills; be proficient in Microsoft Office suite and Google Workspace applications; be technologically savvy and comfortable with learning new software programs; and have strong customer service skills. Ideal applicants will have graphic design and digital marketing experience and be intellectually curious, highly organized, results driven, comfortable working both independently and with a team, and open to giving and seeking feedback.
