Hourly Contract ASL Instructor – Grades 1–8

Independent Contractor | Part-Time | Phoenix, Arizona

Position Overview

Sign Language Hub is seeking engaging, dependable, and fluent American Sign Language instructors to teach weekly, in-person after-school ASL classes at seven public schools within the Madison School District in Phoenix, Arizona.

The program serves students in grades 1–8 during the Fall 2026 semester. Applicants may choose to teach at all seven school locations or select one or more school assignments that fit their availability. Once an assignment is accepted, the instructor must commit to the full seven-week program at that location.

Sign Language Hub is a Deaf-owned educational organization that provides engaging American Sign Language and Deaf culture programs to schools, businesses, and communities nationwide.

Program Schedule

Program length: Seven weeks
Program dates: August 24–October 19, 2026
Location: Madison School District public schools in Phoenix, Arizona

Mondays: August 24–October 19

No classes on September 7 or October 12.

  • Grades 1–4: 2:30–3:30 p.m.
  • Grades 1–4: 2:30–3:30 p.m. at a different school location

Tuesdays: August 25–October 6

  • Grades 1–4: 2:30–3:30 p.m.
  • Grades 5–8: 3:40–4:40 p.m.

Wednesdays: August 26–October 7

  • Grades 5–8: 2:10–3:10 p.m.

Thursdays: August 27–October 8

  • Grades 1–4: 2:30–3:30 p.m.

Fridays: August 28–October 2

  • Grades 1–4: 2:30–3:30 p.m.

Applicants may teach at all seven schools or choose only the school locations and days that fit their schedule. Instructors must commit to the full seven-week session for each school assignment they accept.

Responsibilities

  • Teach engaging, age-appropriate ASL lessons using curriculum guidelines and lesson plans provided by Sign Language Hub.
  • Adapt activities for different ages, grade levels, and learning styles.
  • Introduce students to ASL vocabulary, basic conversation, Deaf culture, and visual communication.
  • Prepare and organize materials for interactive classroom activities.
  • Maintain a positive, inclusive, and supportive learning environment.
  • Use effective classroom-management strategies.
  • Record attendance and communicate regularly with the Sign Language Hub program team.
  • Promptly communicate classroom concerns, student needs, absences, or scheduling issues.
  • Follow all school policies, safety procedures, and classroom expectations.
  • Complete all required onboarding, background checks, training, and school clearance requirements before beginning the position.

Required Qualifications

  • Fluency or strong proficiency in American Sign Language.
  • Knowledge and respect for Deaf culture.
  • Experience teaching or working with children.
  • Ability to work effectively with students in grades 1–8.
  • Strong classroom-management, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Reliable transportation to assigned public schools in the Phoenix area.
  • Dependability and availability for the full Fall 2026 program.
  • Willingness to complete any fingerprinting, background checks, training, certifications, or clearances required by the school district.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience teaching ASL in a school or after-school setting.
  • Experience working with elementary or middle-school students.

Deaf, Hard of Hearing, CODA, and hearing ASL professionals are encouraged to apply.

Compensation

$30–$50 per paid hour, based on experience, qualifications, and assigned responsibilities.

Paid preparation time and the total number of weekly hours will depend on the number of assigned school locations.

This is an independent-contractor position.
