We are seeking compassionate, dependable, and motivated Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) to provide Community Engagement services to adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities throughout Virginia.

As a DSP, you will support individuals in building independence, developing meaningful relationships, participating in community activities, achieving personal goals identified in their Individual Support Plan (ISP), and becoming active members of their communities. This role focuses on empowerment rather than caregiving. DSPs help individuals increase confidence, learn new skills, and experience meaningful community inclusion. Community engagement is a core responsibility of modern DSPs supporting people with disabilities.  

Essential Responsibilities

• Provide person-centered supports according to each individual’s ISP and outcomes.
• Assist individuals in participating in meaningful community activities based on their interests and preferences.
• Encourage independence, self-advocacy, confidence, and informed decision-making.
• Support individuals in developing natural supports and friendships within the community.
• Assist with community integration including volunteering, recreation, fitness, educational opportunities, shopping, banking, dining, and other preferred activities.
• Provide safe transportation to and from approved community activities.
• Complete accurate daily Medicaid documentation and service notes before the end of each shift.
• Maintain confidentiality and comply with HIPAA, DBHDS, DMAS, and company policies.
• Report incidents, accidents, injuries, abuse, neglect, exploitation, or other reportable events immediately.
• Maintain professional boundaries while building positive relationships.
• Participate in required trainings, meetings, supervision, and continuing education.
• Communicate effectively with supervisors, families, support coordinators, and other professionals.
• Promote dignity, respect, choice, and individual rights at all times.
• Ensure the individual’s health, safety, and well-being while in the community.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• At least 18 years of age.
• Valid driver’s license with reliable transportation.
• Current automobile insurance.
• Ability to pass criminal background checks and other required screenings.
• CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain during onboarding).
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work independently and manage time effectively.
• Experience supporting individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities preferred but not required.
