Pet Animal Welfare Society of CT or PAWS' mission is the rescue and adoption of our community's homeless and abused dogs and cats.
The Animal Care Assistant - Dogs will be responsible for the overall care and well-being of the dogs in the shelter, ensuring their feeding and cleanliness of the shelter.
Duties and Responsibilities:
NOTE: This is a year-round part-time position, not seasonal position.
Please only apply if you can work these shifts: Sunday 7 am - noon, Sunday 3 - 7 pm, Saturday 7 am - noon, and alternating Fridays, 3-7 pm.
Cross-training and managing mostly dogs but sometimes cat care, feeding, proper cleaning of the facility and proper care and handling of cats and dogs.
· Monitor the health of the dogs by observing signs or symptoms of illness, injury, or distress, and seeking veterinary care or environment changes as appropriate, in coordination with Kennel Manager.
· Maintain healthy, safe, sanitary and cleanly housing for all dogs.
Communications and Skills
· Good communication skills to ensure a team atmosphere.
· Demonstrate familiarity with dogs and behaviors through either formal training or experience.
· Knowledge of dog handling techniques and common medical conditions.
· Enthusiastic support of the no-kill philosophy.
· Ability to communicate skillfully and effectively with culturally diverse staff and volunteers in a professional, respectful, courteous and tactful manner.
· Comfortable with dogs of unknown disposition and those who may exhibit medical and other problems, as well as aggressive tendencies.
Job Requirements
· Excellent customer relation skills.
Minimum 1 year professional dog handling experience.
Must be able to maneuver steps.
Must be able to maneuver 50 pounds.
Must be able to walk dogs of various temperaments for 10-20 minute walks

· Availability to work weekend shift(s), evenings and holidays.
