JOB DESCRIPTION: LIFEGUARD & YOUTH DEVELOPMENT PROFESSIONAL

Position Title: Lifeguard & Youth Development Professional

Department: Programs 

Reports To: Director of Programs

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

PRIMARY FUNCTION

The Lifeguard & Youth Development Professional ensures the safety of members and guests in the aquatics facility by supervising swimming activities, enforcing safety policies, and responding to emergencies. When not assigned to lifeguard duties, this position supports youth programming by planning, supervising, and engaging members in activities that align with the Club’s priority outcome areas: Academic Success, Healthy Lifestyles, and Good Character & Citizenship.

ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Aquatics / Lifeguarding (Primary Role)

  • Supervise swimming activities and ensure policies, guidelines, and safety procedures are followed.
  • Warn swimmers of improper activities or safety hazards; enforce pool regulations and water safety policies.
  • Administer first aid, rescue swimmers in distress, perform CPR and/or artificial respiration as needed.
  • Evaluate conditions for safety and initiate the Emergency Action Plan when required.
  • Inspect pool, equipment, and water to ensure safety and readiness.
  • Assist in maintaining cleanly pool facilities and equipment.
  • Assist with instructional swim classes when needed.
  • Help resolve scheduling or program conflicts to maintain a safe aquatic environment.

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES (SECONDARY ROLE)

Prepare Youth for Success

  • Create an inclusive and positive environment that supports Youth Development Outcomes.
  • Engage and guide youth, promote program participation, and assist with member registration and orientation.
  • Provide role modeling, mentorship, and supervision to members.
    • Support and deliver programs, activities, and services for drop-in youth.

Program Development & Implementation

  • Monitor and evaluate activities to ensure member safety, program quality, and a well-maintained Club environment.
  • Prepare activity or participation reports as needed.

Supervision & Club Support

  • Maintain a clean, safe environment with well-maintained equipment and supplies.
  • Attend staff meetings and contribute to a positive, collaborative work culture.
  • Assist with special events, program activities, or field trips as assigned.
  • May be required to drive the Club van (if eligible and approved).

QUALIFICATIONS / SKILLS

Lifeguard Qualifications

  • Strong swimming proficiency and comfort in all water conditions.
  • Ability to assess water safety risks and respond quickly and effectively to emergencies.
  • Knowledge of safety procedures and emergency response methods.
  • Ability to judge evolving dynamics and member abilities in aquatic environments.
  • Ability to adjust programming or respond to changing safety needs.

 

Youth Development Skills

  • Experience working with youth; understanding of youth development principles.
  • Ability to motivate youth and manage behavior in a positive, respectful manner.
  • Ability to implement quality programs and activities.
  • Strong communication skills with youth, families, and staff.
  • Ability to supervise and ensure safety in both program and recreational environments.

 

EDUCATION & CERTIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum six (6) months related experience preferred (lifeguarding or youth programming).
  • Required Lifeguard Certifications:
    • Red Cross Lifeguard Training (or equivalent)
    • CPR Certification
    • Red Cross Standard First Aid (or equivalent)
  • Youth Development Requirements:
    • Valid State Driver’s License (if assigned to driving duties)
    • CPR/First Aid certification (already met through lifeguard credentials)

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS / WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Ability to stand, walk, swim, and remain alert for long periods.
  • Ability to lift up to 20 lbs occasionally.
  • Ability to bend, squat, and move equipment as needed.
  • Ability to hear and respond to normal conversation and emergency cues.
  • Indoor and outdoor work environments, including varying weather conditions around pools.
