Come and spend your summer in the heart of Boston! Hill House is a non-profit community center that runs year-round athletic and enrichment program for local families. Located in Beacon Hill, we are fortunate to operate out of "the Firehouse"-- our main camp space, and also permit use of the Boston Common and Ebersol field locations. Regular time outside and weekly field trips that take you all over the Greater Boston area will give you a great way to spend a wonderful summer in the city!

Job Summary 

Hill House seeks energetic, focused and enthusiastic individuals who enjoy working with children ages 3-5 years or 5-12 years for both our Summer Camps. Our counselors have energy to spare, love to play, create, be animated and are contagiously fun— all while maintaining a safe and nurturing environment for our campers.

Day Camp Counselors (for 5–12-year-olds) - 35 hours per week:

Day Camp Counselors work with 5–12-year-olds and report to the Day Camp Team Leader. Day Camp Counselors ensure the safety of campers at all times, supervise and actively participate with campers during all aspects of the day, assist in planning and leading activities, help out at the swimming pool and set an example for campers by maintaining a good attitude—all while keeping up the enthusiasm of 5-10 campers in a group. 

This is a 35 hour per week position, Monday-Friday. Shifts vary by week from as early as 8:00am to as late as 5:30pm but normally somewhere in between. Your shift is 7.5 hours Monday-Friday, excluding 6/19 and 7/3. 

Mandatory staff meetings are held every Wednesday from 4:15 to 4:45 pm.

Kiddie Kamp Counselors (for 3–5-year-olds) - 27.5 hours per week:

Kiddie Kamp counselors work with 3–5-year-olds and report to the Kiddie Kamp Team Leader. Kiddie Kamp Counselors ensure the safety of campers at all times, closely supervise and actively participate with campers during all aspects of the day, assist in planning and leading activities, help walk campers through the streets to the park or fields, engage with campers at the splash pad—all while keeping up the enthusiasm of 5-10 campers in a group. 

This is a 27.5 hour per week position, Monday-Friday between 8:00am and 1:30pm each day. This position is Monday- Friday and excludes 6/19 and 7/3. 

Leader in Training Counselor 35 hours per week: 

The LIT Counselor works with a group of teenagers and makes their summer camp experience special. Planning activities, running games, going on field trips, and creating a positive camp environment is the LIT Counselor’s role. This is a leadership role with more responsibilities and leadership.  

This is a 35-hour per week position, Monday-Friday. From 9:00AM-4:30PM.  

Mandatory staff meetings are held every Wednesday from 4:15 to 4:45 pm. 

The LIT Counselor works with a group of ten-15 year-olds and creates programming that develops the teen's leadership skills and opportunities. 

Summer Dates:

  • Mandatory staff training will be offered between June 8-12 (paid at $10/hour). 
  • Camp will run June 15 through August 28th, Monday through Friday.  
  • *Camp will not meet on Juneteenth or July 3rd.  

Responsibilities and Duties 

  • Ensure that campers are safe at all times. 
  • Supervise campers in your group during all aspects of the day. 
  • Assist in teaching or leading activities. 
  • Maintain active participation with campers at all times. 
  • Identify and meet campers’ individual needs; seek assistance when necessary. 
  • Set a good example for campers by maintaining a good attitude; remember, you are a role model! 
  • Maintain positive and open relationships with campers, the staff team, and parents. 
  • Promote a healthy, safe, supportive and exciting camp environment. 
  • Have fun! 

Qualifications and Skills 

  • Prior experience at camp a plus. 
  • Strong desire and proven ability to work with children in a camp setting. 
  • Ability to lead activities and supervise groups of 4-10 campers in your group. 
  • Ability to relate to campers and other staff as part of a team. 
  • Strong character including but not limited to a sense of humor, enthusiasm, maturity and patience. 
  • Reliability, punctuality and availability throughout the summer. 
  • Possess unique skills or talents that will bring originality and excitement to the camp.
