Mountain Xpress is seeking an experienced government reporter to join our team. An ideal candidate will be comfortable covering local city government meetings and city-led initiatives. You must be able to craft stories that convey important, timely information and empower readers to take part in meaningful civic dialogue and effect change at the local level. Qualified applicants will have 2-3 years experience in news-writing, have social-media skills, write efficiently and enjoy a fast-paced news-gathering environment. Must have knowledge of Asheville and WNC, be community-minded, have a keen sense of fairness with respect for differing points of view and be committed to Xpress’ mission of community-based journalism. Flexible availability required to cover some after-hours meetings and weekend events.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $18.50 - $20.00 per hour
